In 1969 I entered practice with Southeast Neighborhood Legal Services, which was a program that provided a full range of free legal representation to people who could not afford an attorney.  During that time, I handled every type of problem that a person could have - from evictions to defending against debt collectors, to defending uninsured motorists who were being sued by insurance companies.  The last one and a half years with this Organization I took over the Family Law area of the practice and handled 2500 divorces in Court. Most were uncontested. There were at least two contested matter per week during this time.  In 1972 I opened my own practice and specialized in Divorce and Plaintiffs Personal Injury.  I stopped taking contested divorces in 1987.  From 1984 through 1990, in addition to Personal Injury and Family Law, I took two major litigation cases involving multiple Plaintiffs and Defendants.  The first was defending a Property Management company that was an ancillary Defendant in a major Ponzie type scheme.  The second case was Defending an owner of a Cemetary and Crematorium in a Class Action lawsuit involving the inappropriate disposition of Ashes.  Both of these cases were settled.  The main focus of my practice at the present time is Plaintiff's personal Injury and general litigation, with the occassional uncontested divorce.

Prior to joining Engstrom, Lipscomb & Lack, Mr. Samson practiced in San Francisco with a nationwide plaintiff's class action law firm, where he primarily represented individual and institutional investors in securities matters, including federal class actions brought under the Securities Exchange Act and State derivative actions involving Fortune 500 corporations.  During that time, Mr. Samson was part of the litigation team representing a class of UBS "structured products" investors in In re Lehman Brothers Equity/Debt Securities Litigation filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.  Mr. Samson graduated cum laude from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco, and during law school served as a judicial extern for the Honorable Marsha S. Berzon of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.. In addition to his litigation experience, Mr. Samson has spoken on various litigation issues, including effective deposition skills and class action notice.  He is an active member of the Consumer Attorneys of California, the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles, the American Bar Association, and Public Justice.  In 2013, Mr. Samson was named a "Rising Star" by SuperLawyers.

I'm an appellate attorney. My unique background helps me win post-trial motions, writs, and appeals for clients ranging from banks, to insurers, to developers, to other businesses and individuals, in all areas of civil litigation.. Before joining GMSR, I clerked for Judge Paul J. Watford at the Ninth Circuit, where I honed my writing skills and saw up close how judges decide cases. My writing about the law has appeared in Law360, The Business Lawyer, UCLA Law Review, and UCLA’s Journal of Law and Technology. I graduated first in the class from the UCLA School of Law.. But before I became a lawyer, I was a professor of music theory, most recently, on a tenure track at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Indeed, I have yet to encounter a legal problem more daunting than music theory at its most arcane.

I was born and raised in the Silver Lake / East Hollywood area of Los Angeles.  I attended UCLA for college where I majored in History.  I then went on to attend law school at UCLA as well.  I practiced law for almost 13 years with a major international law firm based in Washington D.C. - focusing my practice on construction litigation and complex business litigation.  Throughout my tenure at that law firm, I also volunteered with the Orange County Public Law Center, where I handled family law cases exclusively.  After starting my family, I left the large international firm in search of some work/life balance now that my children are young.  I started a small firm, later joining my practice with Pahl & McCay, which is based in San Jose.  Here at Pahl & McCay, I continue to focus my practice on construction and general business litigation matters and family law matters.  I have also helped to nurture and expand Pahl & McCay's well-known fair housing law practice here in Southern California over the last several years.

I was an insurance defense attorney for 30 years. It was a really great part of my life and the best part was I got to try (and mostly win) over 60 jury trials. Given changes in the defense industry, I decided it was time to make a change. Given my trial experience, I had quite a few plaintiff firms making me offers to come work for them. I picked a firm (Law Offices of Brian J.
