Since obtaining his Juris Doctorate from Hofstra University in 1977, Martin E. Kohler has quickly earned recognition for his outstanding work in criminal law. Michael Hanrahan provides businesses and individuals with legal counsel and advocacy services on a variety of topics, with a primary focus on litigation matters. Mr. Hanrahan is an experienced trial attorney, having represented clients in state and federal courts in more than twenty jury trials and a dozen court trials. He has also represented business clients in Wisconsin administrative proceedings involving discrimination and unemployment compensation claims.. He has provided pre-lawsuit legal counseling and contract drafting for covenants not to compete, and judicial briefing and jury trial services as to covenants not to compete. In a recent jury trial involving a covenant not to compete, Mr. Hanrahan obtained a successful jury verdict in favor of his client on a trade secret claim, and, through legal briefing, a judicial declaration of the covenant not to compete’s invalidity, resulting in a complete victory for his client.. During Mr. Hanrahan’s first several years as an attorney, his practice focused on representing insurance companies, and he gained extensive experience in insurance coverage disputes. Since then, he has regularly represented business clients in insurance coverage disputes, including appellate cases. He has also handled professional negligence claims, including medical, dental and accounting malpractice claims. As part of his representation of insurers, Mr. Hanrahan handled a variety of personal injury lawsuits, including negligence and strict product liability cases. As such, Mr. Hanrahan provides advice and counsel to his clients regarding the potential of settlement throughout the litigation process. He has represented his clients in dozens of mediations, many of which have resulted in satisfactory settlements for his clients. In appropriate circumstances, Mr. Hanrahan uses creative resolution processes. For example, in one case, he negotiated an agreement with the opposing party to settle some aspects of the case, entered binding arbitration for other aspects of the case and tried the remainder of the case to a circuit court jury. Of course, each case is different, and Mr. Hanrahan has shown the ability to be tough when necessary, while continuing to interact with the opposing party in a professional and reasonable manner, thereby keeping the possibility of settlement discussions open at all times.

I've been practicing law since 1995, and I love what I do. I love my work because I thrive off of helping others. Though the money is certainly nice and provides a very comfortable lifestyle, I did not become an attorney to get rich - I became one so that I would have an interesting livelihood with which I could validate my own existence in the universe by doing meaningful things for folks in need of help while fully utilizing all of my language and "people" skills. Unlike a lot of other attorneys, I take the time to provide my clients such quality services as making house calls (not just for the sick or elderly), and I personally return each and every client's telephone call and e-mail reasonably promptly, if not immediately. With the exception of bankruptcy-client cases, no one ever touches my files but me. I do have people helping me out at any given time with the administration of my law practice, but only my hands touch my non-bankruptcy files. I am the only one who drafts my criminal-defense and family-law clients' paperwork, not some paralegal. When a client retains me to handle his or her case in court, I am the one who goes to court for that client, not an associate attorney working for me. And I am the one who is in charge of taking and answering my telephone messages on my direct line. I do everything myself for my clients because modern technology allows me to, and because past experiences have taught me that letting somebody else do work on my cases can lead to sloppy carelessness below the high standards that I adopted from half a decade of military service during the cold war. I realize that what I do for people is very serious business; I take each and every client's case equally as seriously, no matter how much or how little is at stake for each one because everybody's case is important.
