Michael grew up in Sharonville, Ohio, which is a suburb of Cincinnati. At an early age, his parents instilled a hard work ethic, which caused Michael to constantly seek new challenges either in work, school, or with sports. Michael even completed international baccalaureate course work at Princeton High School.. Michael attended Miami University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.  He also minored in Sociology with a focus on Criminology. During his time at Miami, a close friend received a citation for an extremely minor traffic infraction- moving a traffic cone a couple of feet. His friend’s case was publicized to the entire community via the campus newspaper. The State wanted the client to make improvements to a property which the client did not own.  If the client did not oblige the State wanted the client found guilty of a criminal offense.  The State’s position was inherently unfair and unjust.  Michael showed the Court as well as the State his client was not the proper party nor the proper subject to such a criminal action and Michael obtained a dismissal for the client.. Lis Carlson graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2003, and William Mitchell College of Law in 2006. Lis worked as a law clerk at the Anoka County Public Defender’s office during law school where she appeared in court every day representing clients during all stages of criminal cases. During this time she gained invaluable courtroom experience and represented hundreds of clients before she even graduated from law school. Lis is most comfortable in the courtroom and uses her advocacy skills to her clients’ advantage, whether it is during a sentencing argument or a motion to dismiss.. While spending seven years as a trial attorney with the Law Office of the Tenth Judicial District Public Defender, Lis represented thousands of people charged with misdemeanor, gross misdemeanor, and felony level offenses. Lis has experience litigating complex contested and evidentiary hearings and maintains a well-rounded trial practice. She has tried a number of serious felony cases including assault charges, criminal sexual conduct, homicide, and white collar crime matters. Her thorough understanding of DWI law and procedure allowed her to secure outstanding results for her clients in these matters, including dismissals, reduced charges, and downward dispositions from the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines.. Lis prides herself on finding the right path to the right result in each case. Her ability to make her clients feel comfortable and calm during a difficult time in their lives is unmatched.
