His grandfather was the assistant superintendant of schools in Norfolk, Virginia at the time the United States Supreme Court handed down Brown v. Board of Education, the case that held that forced segregation in schools or elsewhere is illegal. After becoming superintendant of schools, his grandfather was charged with carrying out the mandates of the Supreme Court, and integrating Norfolk’s schools, which he did with great courage and commitment to the law.
