I have been practicing law for nearly 30 years. I practice in the area of family law. I enjoy helping people keep their focus on what's best for their children (if they have children) and negotiating a fair division of their assets and liabilities, so people can move forward with their lives.. I also enjoy helping clients with their estate planning. It all happened because I was out with friends one evening, having left my 3 small children with a teenage babysitter and I thought, what if I was severely injured in a car accident on the way home, or worse yet, died? As a parent of small children, I agonized for days and weeks choosing their daycare (on more than one occasion). Yet, I didn't have anything in place to protect them if I became disabled or died. I had life insurance, but that's only money. Who would raise my children as I would?. If I was hospitalized, who would pay my bills? Nowadays, most of us pay our bills online. Who knows your passwords? Who even knows what bills need to be paid?. My answer to all of these questions was easy and frightening - I hadn't done anything to protect my children if something happened to me. I quickly realized that if I hadn't done anything to protect my family, my clients probably hadn't either.. It really is surprisingly simple process to protect your assets and your children. I use plain English to explain everything to you, so you get exactly what you need.. If a loved one becomes incapacitated and doesn't have Powers of Attorney in place, I help their folks establish guardianship and conservatorship to help them care for their loved ones.. The secret is that adoptions are my favorite area to practice. Helping people create a forever family is the most fulfilling thing I do professionally.. I also have a passion for helping LGBTQ+ clients and their allies. I provide a safe, healthy, and supportive place for my LGBTQ+ clients within all my areas of practice. I also help trangender clients with name changes.

I have been fortunate to experience a diverse set of legal environments, including a government agency, small law firm, and large law firm. These experiences provide invaluable context to my current, and immensely enjoyable, role as in-house counsel to a Fortune 500 company.. My specialty is regulatory compliance in the financial services and health care industries. Of equal importance, I am friendly and responsive, and focus on establishing solid relationships.

I handle VA disability claim appeals.. As a combat veteran, I've watched a lot of friends, comrades, and even some family members go through a whole lot, not only while in service but afterward.  It's a lucky thing that we have an organization as good as the Veterans Administration.  But, as good as it is, it has its faults and a lot of vets fall between the bureaucratic cracks.  It's my job to help them out and I'm very happy to do so.

I grew up in Northeast Missouri and graduated from Truman State University in 2002. I attended law school in Vermillion, South Dakota. While in law school in interned at the Federal Public Defender in Omaha.. Upon graduation I accepted a position at the Public Defender's Office in Sioux Falls, SD. During my 6 years at that office, I handled thousands of cases ranging from traffic tickets to serious felonies.. I have filed numerous pre-trial motions to keep specific evidence out at trial with the most public one being in 2013 where a successful pre-trial motion kept the prosecutors from using the term "abusive head trauma" on a shaken baby case.. I have also had numerous trials, both jury and bench trials, with great outcomes.. As I handled more and more cases I realized that a "win" was not necessarily a not guilty verdict (although those are fantastic), but helping clients to make major life changes. I have been able to get clients through diversion programs where they are able to move forward to receive degrees or professional certificates, to one client even opening her own business.. Leaving that office was tough because of the relationships I had made, but being able to work for myself and to put more time into every case has been just as rewarding.

I am the founding attorney of Hathaway Law Group, P.C. L.L.O. with offices in Omaha, Nebraska and Kansas City, Missouri. Mainly my practice is focused on alternative options for those seeking a divorce or dealing with family law issues, that is custody, property, and support. These alternatives include options such as uncontested-attorney assisted divorce, mediated divorce, and collaborative law divorce, but the special emphasis I like to make is that we strive to help all our clients find a non-litigated option.
