Our son, Sam, works in Los Angeles pursuing his passion for sound recording, sound effects and sound design for movies. Our daughter, Kate, is getting her Masters degree in Speech and Language Pathology. They are both smarter, better looking, and way cooler than their parents.. My wife, Susan Morris, has her Masters in Special Education. She taught for ten years in public schools and established Morris Tutoring Associates, Inc. in 1985. Our joke is that we created an institution for her to volunteer at, because there is no money to be made tutoring. But there is great joy. She has helped many hundreds of kids, and adores almost all of them.. In 1979, two years out of law school, I handled a pro bono women's rights case from start to successful conclusion at the Arizona Supreme Court, establishing the right of married women to keep their last name if they wished to.. My father was a career Air Force officer, who became a meteorologist after spending 18 months in a German POW camp. He flew as a navigator in the Hurricane Hunters, and I grew up on Air Force bases around the US, in Bermuda and in Germany. When I graduated from high school I was appointed to the Air Force Academy, but failed the medical exam because I am a little color blind. The color vision also kept me out of the US Marines when tried to enlist in 1975.. Susan and I are both active in the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Phoenix. I have sung in the choir since 2002, am a frequent Master of Ceremonies at congregational fundraising events, have served on the Committee on Ministry, Foundation Board, Capital Committee, and am currently a Member of the Board of Trustees.. I have been active in leadership in the Arizona Association for Justice (lawyers who represent injured folks, and formerly known as the Arizona Trial Lawyers Association) since 1985. I was an active participant in battles to protect the Arizona Constitution from the insurance industry and big business interests in 1986, 1990 and 1994. Madison Van Natter is an Associate Attorney at Doran Justice, PLLC. She was born in Lansing, Michigan, and later moved to Monticello, Minnesota, where she lived during elementary school and the early years of middle school. In 2012, Madison returned to Michigan, where she completed her high school education in Kalamazoo.. During high school, Madison discovered her passion for law through participation in mock trial. She was actively involved in her school’s Model United Nations organization and, in her senior year, began competing in high school mock trial competitions. She enjoyed working on cases and deepening her understanding of the law. Although she always intended to pursue a career in law, her experience in mock trial confirmed her desire to become a criminal defense attorney.. After high school, Madison was accepted into the James Madison Honors College at Michigan State University, a political science honors program. There, she earned a major in Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy, along with a minor in German. Throughout her four years at MSU, Madison actively participated in mock trial competitions, winning more than ten individual awards for her performances as both a witness and an attorney.. Additionally, she founded the MSU Undergraduate Moot Court Association, where she competed and placed at the national tournament for two consecutive years. Madison credits much of her success to the mentors and coaches who dedicated their time to help her grow as both an individual and a future attorney.. After completing her undergraduate studies, Madison attended the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. During law school, she participated in nearly all internal competitions, placing in every single one. Madison applied the speaking and advocacy skills she developed through mock trial to her coursework, ultimately earning the CALI award in her Litigation Experience class.. During law school, Madison participated in Arizona's Rule 39 program, which allows law students to represent real clients under the supervision of a licensed attorney. Under the guidance of Chris Doran and Tyler Schwenke, she had the opportunity to second chair DUI trials, conduct evidentiary hearings, and interview several police officers.. Madison also participated in Rule 39 through her law school clinic. In her third year, she joined the Public Defender Clinic, where she contributed to a DUI trial, interviewed clients, and helped negotiate favorable plea deals for several individuals. Madison loved making a difference in her clients' lives and supporting them during their times of need.. In her free time, Madison enjoys traveling, singing, and spending time with her friends, family, and her dog, Maxwell. She also loves getting to know and mentor the undergraduate students competing in Sun Devil Mock Trial. Krystal M. Ahart is a partner at Kahn & Ahart, PLLC, dba Bankruptcy Legal Center™. She focuses her practice on assisting individuals and businesses through the bankruptcy process in Chapters 7, 11, and 13. She first began working with her law Partner in 2002, when she was hired as a receptionist for the law firm of James F.
