I have been practicing environmental law in Arizona and throughout the Southwest with an emphasis on water quality, water rights, environmental compliance auditing, solid and hazardous waste, mining and mined land reclamation and remediation, toxic substances and Superfund matters for the past 30 years. I have a nationally-recognized water quality practice and I work closely with my clients on federal, state, and local levels to develop workable strategies to promote development and expansion of both industrial and mining operations. I participate activitely as a member of the Arizona Mining Association Water Quality Subcommittee (I currently serve as the vice-chair of that subcommittee).  I also serve as the co-chair of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry Water Quality Subcommittee (formerly the Arizona Association of Industries Water Quality Subcommittee), a position I have filled since 2001.

I grew up in a construction family in the Midwest.  Several generations of my family are involved in the construction industry and as a result I started working in construction, surveying, and engineering when I was in grade school.  This has given me a unique perspective on the practical issues in construction, design, and environmental matters.. As a civil engineer I designed hydroelectric dams, tunnels, water treatment plants, and navigation facilities, and conducted construction site supervision of the Chicago Tunnel and Reservoir Plan and Chicago Freight Tunnel.  For instance, I was one of the original conceptual designers of the civil engineering portions of the Montgomery Point Lock and Dam, which after it was completed, was named 2007's most impressive engineering achievement in the nation with the "Grand Conceptor Award".  The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan better known as the Deep Tunnel is one of the largest civil engineering projects ever undertaken and has received numerous awards.  The awards include being named as the most significant public works project in Illinois of the 20th century, and it was named by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency as one of the nation's top Clean Water Act success stories and is serving as a model urban water management tool worldwide.  The picture above is me in the deep tunnel - 330' below the ground.. In addition, I work with industry trade associations to review and comment on federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations and represent Clients before federal and state courts. I was appointed in 2017 to The Associated General Contractors of America's Environmental Forum Steering Committee to review AGC's policies and programs.

Obtaining a full defense verdict in an Arizona state court for a national petroleum distributor after a three week jury trial where the Plaintiffs were seeking approximately $14 million in damages due to the alleged migration of petroleum hydrocarbons onto its property.
