John graduated from the University of Chicago Law School with Honors in 1998.  While at the University of Chicago, he was a member of the University of Chicago Law Review and wrote a note for the University of Chicago Legal Forum entitled "Genetics and Justice: An Indigent Defendant's Right to DNA Expert Assistance."  After graduation, John served for one year as a law clerk for Judge Ed Carnes, a federal appeals court judge in Montgomery, Alabama, and then for another year as a law clerk for Judge Shira Scheindlin, a federal trial judge in New York City.. After completing his clerkships, John worked for several years as an associate at Shea & Gardner (now Goodwin Procter), a commercial litigation firm in Washington, D.C.  John moved to Oregon in 2004 and began working as a Deputy District Attorney in Multnomah County in January 2005.  During his time as a Deputy D.A., John worked in the misdemeanor trial unit and felony property unit.  While in the D.A.'s office, John handled approximately 50 trials and presented numerous cases to the grand jury.. Jim was born in Chicago in 1949. He worked as a construction laborer, apprentice plumber, dishwasher, golf caddy, and parking attendant during high school and college. Belloni in Federal Court before beginning private practice.. I started practicing law in 1992.  I opened up my own practice immediately after graduating from law school and passing the bar exam.  For the first two years I mostly did criminal defense.  Then I started representing criminal defendants in civil matters:  they had been held in jail too long, or beaten by the police.  Then I began to represent people outside of the criminal law system injured in accidents  -- primarily car accidents.. I liked doing that sort of work (personal injury or "PI" work).  It tends to be less contentious and less stressful than some other areas, although no area of litigation is without its stressors, as conflict is inherent in the process.. When I cannot agree with the other side -- which is often, I am afraid -- I like to adhere to two concepts.  The first is to disagree without being disagreeable.  The second is to agree to disagree:  stop trying to convince the other side that I am right and get the case before a judge or arbitrator to settle the matter.

I loved teaching and flying in instrument conditions, basically in the clouds or fog, using only the instruments in the airplane to maintain safe flight. In 1981, I decided I didn't want to seek a job with an airline--though I have continued to be a current  flight instructor since 1981.I enrolled in the Northwestern School of Law of Lewis and Clark College in the fall of 1981 and graduated in 1984. I grew up in Portland, Oregon. After high school, I first moved to Corvallis in 1993 and was an electrical engineering student at Oregon State University. After three years, I transferred to University of Colorado at Boulder to complete my engineering degree.After my undergraduate work was complete, I worked as an electrical engineer for six years, primarily with Intel Corporation in Hillsboro, Oregon. In 2002, I started law school as an evening student at Northwestern School of Law at Lewis and Clark College while continuing to work full time at Intel. During this time, I attended law school classes after work.. In 2004, I left Intel and took a clerking job at the Portland firm of Swanson, Thomas, and Coon. There I worked with a number of exceptional attorneys, primarily in the areas of workers' compensation and personal injury law. I also developed an interest in criminal law and criminal defense.In 2006, I took a position as a certified law student at the public defender's office of Multnomah Defenders in Portland. I was certified to appear in court on behalf of clients for misdemeanor trials, arraignments, motion hearings, and DUII diversions. I came to Portland in 1988 to attend law school at Lewis & Clark, Northwestern School of Law after completing my undergraduate studies at Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA.  I was raised in the country on the Kitsap Peninsula and more or less consider myself a native of the Pacific Northwest.  I've always had a deep love for the Portland, Oregon community, and I am proud to call it my home.  I have raised two children in the community over the past 32 years along with several cats and dogs.  My hobbies include cycling, hiking, mountaineering, downhill skiing, rafting and pretty much anything that gets me outdoors in the beautiful Pacific Northwest.. I began my legal career as a law clerk during law school for a firm that did both insurance defense work and plaintiff's personal injury cases on behalf of individuals.  Firms of this nature are rare in today's legal community because they are almost always one or the other...not both.  I worked 20 to 30 hours a week for the law firm during law school and attended classes full time. After I graduated in the top 20% of my class from law school, I passed the bar examination on my first attempt and began working at the same firm that I worked for during law school. My mentor was a senior litigation attorney who previously worked as a law professor part time at the Nothwestern School of Law when it was a night school in downtown Portland.  He was an excellent teacher, and he taught me how to try cases to juries in the courts of Oregon.  I was handling jury trials in my first year out of law school, which is almost unheard of these days.  I also had opportunities to "second chair" cases with the senior attorney for serious injuries as well as wrongful death.  When my mentor retired, I took over his case load of plaintiff's cases, and I have been primarily practicing on my own litigating cases on exclusively behalf of individual plaintiffs for over two decades.
