Between college and law school, he worked in the United States Senate in Washington, D.C. for U.S. Senator Adlai E. Stevenson III of Illinois. In 1983, Doug graduated cum laude from Suffolk University Law School where he was a member of the Law Review. He then returned to Maine, and from 1983 to 1985, practiced in Bangor with now Supreme Judicial Court Justice Warren M. Silver. In 1985, he moved to Portland where he was a partner at the law firm of Bornstein and Hovermale.. In 1995, Doug co-founded Kaplan & Grant where he limits his practice to personal injury and workers' compensation law. Since then, he and Ben have helped thousands of Maine's injured and disabled citizens. Doug has lectured at numerous professional seminars. He has served as Counselor to the Edward T. Gignoux Inn of Court, and is a member of the American Association for Justice, the Maine State Bar Association, and the Maine Trial Lawyers Association. He has been named as one of the New England Super Lawyers. He is admitted to practice in the state and federal courts of Maine and Massachusetts as well as the U.S. Supreme Court. He is a past President of the Purpoodock Club in Cape Elizabeth. He and his wife, Ann, have two children, Samuel and Lisa. Doug is an avid skier and golfer and regularly bicycles to work on a year-round basis.
