Matt joined the firm as an associate in 2015 and is a member of the firm's Business, Litigation, and Business & Restructuring practice groups. His legal work consists primarily of drafting pleadings and dispositive motions, including motions for summary judgment and motions to dismiss; researching legal issues across the firm's 13 practice areas; and handling litigation-related discovery issues, with a particular focus on e-discovery.  Prior to joining Sussman Shank, Matt clerked for the Hon. Elizabeth L. Perris in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Oregon, where he aided the court in a variety of matters implicating state and federal bankruptcy law. Matt graduated Order of the Coif from the University of Oregon, and he was awarded the American Bankruptcy Institute Medal of Excellence for Bankruptcy for his bankruptcy-related coursework.

Jim Choi moved to Oregon from California in 1979.  He attended Gresham Union High School and graduated in 1988.  He graduated from college at Portland State University with a Bachelor’s of Science in 1993.  He then immediately attended Law School at Willamette University College of Law and graduated with a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1996.  He has interned at the Department of Justice during law school, and subsequently opened his law office.

I am the Legal Director of the Community Law Project, a nonprofit dedicated to meeting the everyday legal needs of Oregonians.  We have a broad practice, with areas including bankruptcy, employment law, consumer issues, small business advising, tenant representation, small claims court advising, personal income tax issues, and more.

Doug has focused his practice on bankruptcy since 2004. While in law school at Lewis and Clark, Doug clerked for the Oregon Department of Justice in the Civil Recovery Section. Outside of the office, he enjoys spending time with his wife, daughter, and son, playing the occasional round of golf, and watching Oregon State University sports.

A lifelong resident of Maine, I graduated from Bowdoin College summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa where I met my wife, Carrie McGilvery, a Yarmouth native. I briefly pursued a career before attending Boston College Law School. There, I was a writer for the Uniform Commercial Code Reporter Digest.. After law school, I returned to Maine, where I have practiced exclusively in the fields of consumer and small business bankruptcy and consumer law in Saco, later in Auburn, and for the past five years, in Portland.. I pride myself on offering one-on-one communication with my clients, at a low cost. Many bankruptcy lawyers divide up the work between the partner, associates and paralegals.
