I have been practicing law in Maine since 2007 with a focus on real property and small business issues.  I provide personal service at a reasonable rate.. I graduated from public high school in 1976, and then went to Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, graduating in 1980 with a bachelor of arts majoring in economics. I spent 1980-81 cleaning the undersides of airplanes while becoming a commercial rated pilot and a certified flight instructor, instrument and airplane. I loved teaching and flying in instrument conditions, basically in the clouds or fog, using only the instruments in the airplane to maintain safe flight. In 1981, I decided I didn't want to seek a job with an airline--though I have continued to be a current  flight instructor since 1981.I enrolled in the Northwestern School of Law of Lewis and Clark College in the fall of 1981 and graduated in 1984. I spent several years working for the law school's legal clinic where I primarily assisted low-income people needing help with consumer problems. I went in to private practice upon his admission to the Bar in September, 1984. Since then, I have represented thousands of people in getting a fair resolution of their claim against wrongdoers and insurance companies. I grew up thinking I wanted to be a lawyer. After graduating from Colby in 1990 wiith a degree in philosophy, and then working for a year and a half at a large law firm, I began law school at the University of Maine in 1992. In the summer of 1994, I began my career in criminal law as an intern at the DA's office in Portland, and worked as an assistant District Attorney for several years thereafter. Since 2004 I have been a criminal defense attorney, representing clients throughout Maine. Consistent with my initial notions as a teenager, I love practicing law.. My wife Nori and I raised our two kids in Portland; they have both since graduated from college. For many years I coached youth sports, and since then have been involved as a board member for a number of organizations. Through both professional and life experience, I have learned that the best representation involves approaching each case from every angle, including what is important about, and important to, my client.. I grew up in Portland, Oregon. After high school, I first moved to Corvallis in 1993 and was an electrical engineering student at Oregon State University. After three years, I transferred to University of Colorado at Boulder to complete my engineering degree.After my undergraduate work was complete, I worked as an electrical engineer for six years, primarily with Intel Corporation in Hillsboro, Oregon. In 2002, I started law school as an evening student at Northwestern School of Law at Lewis and Clark College while continuing to work full time at Intel. During this time, I attended law school classes after work.. In 2004, I left Intel and took a clerking job at the Portland firm of Swanson, Thomas, and Coon. There I worked with a number of exceptional attorneys, primarily in the areas of workers' compensation and personal injury law. I also developed an interest in criminal law and criminal defense.In 2006, I took a position as a certified law student at the public defender's office of Multnomah Defenders in Portland. I was certified to appear in court on behalf of clients for misdemeanor trials, arraignments, motion hearings, and DUII diversions. After graduating from law school in 2006, I joined my father and wife to create West Valley Law Group PC in Corvallis, Oregon.  There, I focused primarily on general litigation practice and criminal defense.After two years of successful practice, in Corvallis, I relocated to Portland to continue the practice of law after Tim Brittle retired.  I have grown my law firm to as many as 5 attorneys, and have since reduced it to the convenience of a solo practice. I fell in love with the Pacific Northwest when I came to visit for the first time and knew I wanted to grow roots here. The people are warm and friendly and we have some of the most amazing outdoor activity opportunities. I love hiking in the Columbia River Gorge, walking around Portland's eastside, and being able to drive out to the coast in about an hour. Great things happen when you live in such a great community.

I enjoy working with businesses, nonprofits and healthcare organizations to tackle employment-related legal issues.  Often these issues are not clear cut and involve a team approach, quite a bit of give and take with the client, and some good common sense problem-solving.  There is nothing that gives me greater satisfaction than taking a complex and contentious situation and having it work out to the satisfaction of both the employee and the employer, without the need for litigation.

I concentrate my practice in debtor/creditor law, focusing on representing banks, individuals, committees, and creditors in commercial Chapter 11 reorganizations. Prior to joining Lane Powell, I was a federal prosecutor for approximately 17 years in Los Angeles and Philadelphia. As a federal prosecutor, I tried numerous criminal jury trials and conducted scores of federal grand jury investigations. I also assisted other government agencies in conducting related civil litigation and administrative proceedings. I have extensive experience in investigations involving a myriad of federal crimes, including securities fraud, corporate embezzlement, bankruptcy fraud, health care fraud, bank fraud, mail fraud, environmental crimes and money laundering offenses. As a federal prosecutor, I was selected to serve on several national task forces and working groups related to the areas of money laundering, health care fraud, bankruptcy fraud, and securities fraud.
