Firm: Stone Law Office, PLC

Todd Stone is a trial lawyer in Richmond, VA.  He grew up in Harrisonburg, VA where he prosecuted criminal cases after law school. He moved to Richmond, VA to lead both the violent crimes unit and the drug prosecution team in two of the largest urban prosecutor's offices in Virginia.  In Henrico County, he was appointed as Special Counsel to the Multi-Jurisdiction Grand Jury for the City of Richmond & the Counties of Henrico, Hanover & Chesterfield.  In 1999, as a Special Assistant United States Attorney, he assisted in the prosecution of a “takeover” capital murder & bank robbery case.  This effort required about a year of preparation and after a lengthy successful trial he was presented with the Director’s Award from United States' Attorney General, The Hon. Janet Reno, in Washington, DC.  Stone's immediate supervisors were the Hon. James B. Comey, current Director of the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) and the Hon. Ken Melson, former acting Director of the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms).. Although he prosecuted numerous notable trials including murders, the Fan area serial rapist and multi-defendant gang violence & drug conspiracies, perhaps the most memorable was one he chose not to prosecute.  As a young prosecutor Stone was handed a high profile supermarket shooting case to prosecute.  He tenaciously prepared by visiting the scene, speaking with witnesses and reviewed numerous reports.  The cross-racial identification was shaky and when he uncovered evidence that strongly suggested the innocence of the young man, he dropped the case shortly before trial.  "A defense attorney's duties are to the client, but a prosecutor's duty is to the justice system as a whole.  That case was memorable and I've never had any regrets.". Stone handles a select number of cases in order to dedicate the time & attention that a case deserves.  His office is in the historic Columbian Block building above the cobblestone streets of Shockoe Slip in downtown Richmond, VA.  Stone has received the peer-voted “Superlawyer” for multiple years, the “Nation’s Top One Percent,” the “Top 100 Trial Lawyers,” the “Top Ten Attorneys,” the “Ten Best,” & as noted above, the Director's Award from U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno.. Todd Stone is regularly called as a legal analyst on multiple news outlets across Virginia & the U.S.  In the past, the list includes “NPR” National Public Radio, CNN, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, CBS This Morning & others. Most often he proudly serves central Virginia's two most historic & relied upon news sources, WTVR CBS6 television news & WRVA news radio 1140 AM.  WTVR was the first television station established south of Washington, DC.  WRVA, established in 1925, was one of the first radio stations in the U.S.. Outside of the law field, Stone advocates to help find a treatment or cure for a medical condition that affects his children.  He serves on the Board of Directors for the Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation (MDF).  The MDF is the only major "disease-specific" foundation in the U.S. that focuses on Myotonic Muscular Dystrophy (MMD).  The foundation has grown exponentially in recent years and is advancing important medical research.  There is genuine promise of a treatment within our own lifetime.  Because it's caused by an extra stutter in the DNA  scientists have focused on silencing that portion of the gene with some marked success.  Since there's nothing missing in the DNA, silencing the toxic RNA leaves a normally functioning system thus an effective treatment could actually reverse the disease symptoms (as opposed to just halting it's progression). This has been shown in recent years with treatments tested in animal models.

PERSONAL. Craig is married and has three children, two boys and a girl.  Craig spends much of his free time coaching and cheering his children in their athletic events including soccer, swimming and baseball.  In his free time Craig enjoys reading, traveling, baseball, football, soccer and golf.  Craig has served on the pastoral council of his church.  Craig is a board member of First Touch Sports which is a non-profit organization which uses sports as a tool to teach young people important values and life skills that will help them lead healthy and productive lives.. EDUCATION. Craig was born and raised on Long Island New York and first became interested in the law in high school.  He was fortunate enough to attend a high school that was one of the few who had a law program.  In high school Mr. Follis took several law classes and participated in the First High School International Moot Court Program which allowed him to argue with his team at the United Nations against a team of Canadian high school students. Upon graduating from high school, Mr. Follis attended Penn State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance.  Mr. Follis’ interest in the law continued and he was selected to join the Undergraduate Student Government Department of Legal Affairs.  In his senior year Mr. Follis was the Director of the Department of Legal Affairs.  This experience and helping students with their legal issues and honor code violations increased Mr. Follis’ interest in the law and he decided to attend law school.. After graduating from Penn State, Mr. Follis moved to Richmond Virginia to attend law school at the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond.  After graduating from law school and passing the Virginia State Bar exam in 1989, Mr. Follis was employed by Virginia Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company as their claims attorney.    This position involved managing all litigation throughout the state of Virginia involving their insureds.  Mr. Follis was responsible for researching and evaluating personal injury claims and coverage issues.  In his role as claims attorney Mr. Follis monitored attorneys across the state of Virginia who litigated cases on behalf of Virginia Farm Bureau.  Mr. Follis was ultimately responsible for determining which cases to settle and which cases to have go to trial.. After five years of employment with Virginia Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company and after gaining invaluable experience in how insurance companies operate, including how they defend and evaluate claims, Mr. Follis along with two of his law school classmates David Epperly and Kevin Schork formed the law firm of Epperly, Follis & Schork in 1994.. DEFENDING INSURANCE COMPANIES. Mr. Follis took his skills and experience developed through his employment at Virginia Farm Bureauand moved into the area of litigation.  He became one of the attorneys he previously managed.  On behalf of Virginia Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company, he began representing their insureds in lawsuits filed against them primarily involving motor vehicle accidents and insurance coverage issues.  This involved meeting with clients and evaluating liability, settlement values and coverage questions.  He defended individuals in litigation including depositions, mediations, arbitrations and trials.. HELPING PEOPLE. After defending people who caused accidents and insurance companies, Epperly, Follis& Schork decided they no longer wished to represent insurance and trucking companies, but wanted to help individuals recover what they deserve from individuals responsible for causing our client’s injuries.  They returned over all of their insurance files and began to and continue to zealously represent individuals who have been injured by the wrongful acts of other individuals and corporations.

It's an honor and a privilege to be a member of the Virginia State Bar, and I awake thankful everyday that I'm a lawyer with the opportunity to help people in need.  Whether you've received a speeding ticket, you've been charged with a serious felony, you've been injured in an automobile accident, or you have an issue with your family, I believe I can help you.  I have a diverse practice with an emphasis on criminal, personal injury, and domestic relations law.  If the case could end up in front of a judge or jury, chances are that the case falls within my expertise.. I grew up in South Boston, Virginia, and after graduating from VMI I worked for three years in the healthcare construction industry.  I eventually decided I wanted to be a lawyer, and after law school I became a prosecutor in Southampton and Mecklenburg County.  During my time as a prosecutor, I tried numerous felony and misdemeanor criminal cases in front of judges and juries.  I then entered private practice, where I've continued to broaden my practice.  I represent large companies, single mothers, college students, business people, construction workers, and everyone in between.  There is no case too big or small, and I pride myself on having honest communication with all my clients.  I never promise a successful outcome, only that I will do everything in my power to get a favorable result, fight as hard as I can, and handle your case with the utmost integrity.. I spend most of my free time with my wife, Elizabeth, at our home here in Richmond.  I enjoy spending time with friends and family when I'm not at the office.  I'm an avid college football fan and spend Fall Saturdays pulling hard for Elizabeth's alma mater, The University of Alabama Crimson Tide.  In the Winter I enjoy watching college basketball and try not to miss many UVA games.  When the weather warms up, I enjoy spending as much time as possible outside, and I especially enjoying grilling different types of meat and fish.  We're proud members of First Presbyterian Church and try to stay as active as we can with church functions.. I hope this introduction tell you a littel about more than just my law practice.  If you have questions about a legal matter, please do not hesitate to contact me.  I'm here to help and look forward to speaking with you soon.. Ben
