Nathan Coulter joined Gilbert, Bird & Weston as an associate attorney in 2016, after graduating from the University of Richmond School of Law. Nathan received his undergraduate degree from the College of William and Mary in 2012. Nathan is a born litigator whose practice currently focuses on family law, including divorce, child custody and visitation, child and spousal support, and property distribution; however, he practices a broad range of general litigation. Nathan gained much experience in criminal litigation during three internships with various Virginia Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Offices.. As the son of a mechanic and a nurse, Nathan is no stranger to hard work and he understands the value of other people’s time and money. He prides himself on his efficiency and the ability to deliver timely results. Practicing primarily family law, Nathan fully appreciates how difficult the legal process can be on the client and the client’s family. Consequently, Nathan believes in the importance of keeping clients informed and involved, and in being a responsible steward of the resources clients trust him with.. I was born and raised in Virginia.  I attended college and law school in Virginia, and have enjoyed building a legal career and practicing law in courts across the state, from Roanoke to Virginia Beach, and from Richmond to Fairfax to Winchester.. I enjoy nearly every facet of the law, but I have a particular focus on the ethics of the practice of law, as well as the complexities of Virginia civil procedure.  Having had the opportunity while I was in law school to study and to work with W. Hamilton Bryson, author of the definitive treatise on Virginia Civil Procedure and truly one of the kindest and most intelligent men I have ever met, I gained an appreciation for the framework of our procedural rules.. I am fascinated not only by the rules themselves, but by the history behind the rules.  Virginia's legal community always keeps an eye on its rich legal tradition and its prominence in shaping American legal history.  From the strict rules governing some of the first British settlements on our continent, to the pivotal role of Virginia's legal elite in the founding of our nation, to the evolution of the law in Virginia to meet the challenges of the new millennium, our Commonwealth has inspired, and been inspired by, attorneys.  I am proud to be a part of that long and storied tradition.
