Jesse began his legal career working for the Salt Lake District Attorney in 2008, but quickly learned that he’d rather defend someone who made a mistake rather than put an innocent person in jail. His interest in helping people at their worst moments comes from his belief that every person, regardless of their background or crime, deserves the best defense. He joined the Salt Lake Legal Defender Association (LDA) in 2012 where he excelled at achieving excellent results for his clients, despite at times having the highest caseload of any attorney. Recognizing his legal skills and ability to teach others, Jesse became LDA’s intern coordinator. He was responsible for training law students from the University of Utah and Brigham Young University on practicing criminal defense. Jesse’s passion for helping people at their worst moments persuaded Jesse to form Conyers & Nix.. Jesse was recognized for his legal expertise when he was nominated to become a Judge in the Salt Lake City Justice Court. After he was not selected by Mayor Jackie Biskupski, Utah Governor Gary Herbert appointed Jesse to serve on Utah's Third District Judicial Nominating Commission where he interviews lawyers applying to be trial judges.. I aggressively defend my clients. I have over 25 years of experience in the state and federal courts and developed an extensive criminal defense practice. I worked with the Western Trial Advocacy Institute and has tried numerous federal and state felony and misdemeanor cases. I have also been active in the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Utah Appellate Courts.. I attended the University of Wyoming College of Law after obtaining bachelor degrees in Physics, Materials Science and Engineering and Political Science at the University of Utah. While at the University of Wyoming I was active in the Potter Law Club and became director of the Prosecution Assistance Program.. Following law school, I clerked for the Ninth Judicial District Court for the State of Wyoming. He then became a deputy prosecuting attorney in Fremont County, Wyoming. He handled cases involving felonies, misdemeanors, juvenile court and competency hearings, taking a fair number of them to trial.. I have conducted hundreds of trails in my carrier, including cases where my clients have been accused of: Muder, RICO, White Collar, Fraud, Forgery, Possession and Ditribution of Controlled Substances, DUI, Child Abuse, Illegal Possession of Firearms, Bank Robbery, Aggravated Kidnaping, Aggravated Assault, and much more.. I like the challenge that comes with defendant someone accused of an offense. I like to think of my clients as Federal Three-Percenters or State Five-Percenters. Righly 97% of the people charged federally get convicted and face possible prision and only 3% go home. Roughly 95% of the people charged in the state system get convicted and face possible prision and only 5% go home. There is no guarnatee as to how any case will come out, but I fight hard to protect my clients and want every one of them to get the change to go home, be with their families and enjoy their life.
I practice in the areas of Business and Corporate Governance, Trademark and Copyright, Cybersecurity, Media law, Nonprofit law, Technology law, and Real Estate. I represent and advise clients in the areas of high tech, construction, healthcare, non-profit, the arts, advertising, technology, publishing, hospitality, and retail, among others. I have negotiated, drafted, reviewed, and revised scores of business and personal contracts and related agreements, including corporate and LLC documents, purchase contracts, assignments, commercial leases, HOA documents, technology licenses, IP agreements, service contracts, and loan documents, among many others. As a former communications professional, I focus on accessibility and providing exceptional personalized service to each client.. I began my career as a journalist and magazine editor. As such, I had the opportunity to ask a lot of questions. That background provides me with invaluable experience in carefully listening to clients as a means of seeking to understand their issues. I have also been a small business owner, which gives me insights into the issues entrepreneurs face as they attempt to juggle multiple responsibilities, including management, employee relations, intellectual property and trade secrets, and regulatory requirements.. I seek to collaborate with clients and remain in close contact as we undertake a project. By working together, we can effectively identify issues and weigh possible solutions. I have found that when a client is fully informed and has an opportunity to consult with his or or her lawyer, some of the anxiety that the legal system inspires dissipates and problems seem less overwhelming. I'm also a firm believer in the old adage that the only stupid question is the one left unasked.. My hobbies include hiking and backpacking with my wife, daughter, and two golden retrievers, collecting first edition books about the Southwest, and playing bluegrass music on the guitar and dobro.

I love my career as a Criminal Defense Attorney. Every day, I get to defend our Constitutional rights against an excessively punitive and discriminatory criminal "justice" system. In our criminal "justice" system, many people are wrongfully accused, over-charged, over-punished, or simply not afforded basic human respect. I endeavor to help my clients navigate this system. Sometimes this requires me to show a Jury why my client is wrongfully accused. Sometimes this requires me to show a Judge why a search, seizure, or interrogation, violated our Constitution. Sometimes this requires me to work with a Prosecutor to reach a fair and just resolution in a case. I look forward to performing these tasks and others in order to most effectively serve the people whom I represent.. Prior to opening my own practice, I worked at the firm of Langford-Ramos and its predecessor, Langford Legal. I also interned at the Salt Lake Legal Defender's Association, at the Utah Court of Appeals, and at the Hill Air Force Base Office of Legal Counsel. I currently sit on the Utah State Bar's Board for the Young Lawyer's Division as the Chair of a program that provides free representation to people facing eviction and as a Committee Member for a program that provides free legal advice to Veterans. I have been recognized as the 2018 Pro Bono Attorney of the Year and continue to volunteer through the Utah State and Federal Courts.. Prior to practicing law, I served in the United States Marine Corps and the Utah National Guard. My experience as an Infantry Platoon Sergeant, Intelligence Sergeant, and Linguist, helped prepare me to be successful in this career. I have been honored to represent many veterans in my practice.

I have zealously represented clients in both federal and state court. I've represented individuals charged with drug distribution, drug possession, money laundering, kidnapping, bank fraud, wire fraud, rape, murder, aggravated identity fraud, forcible sexual abuse, child pornography, dui, bank robbery, illegal reentry, immigration fraud, aggravated assault, among others.. I have witnessed the frustrations that individuals experience as they slowly make their way through the criminal justice system. My goal is to become the most effective advocate I can for the accused.

A significant part of my practice includes representing clients from outside of the United States before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, including clients from Europe, China, Japan, Korea, and Israel.. Clients trust my ability to obtain patents that are enforceable against competitors. U.S. patents in the medical device field that I obtained have been successfully asserted at the district court level to obtain a multimillion-dollar judgement. U.S. patents in the superabrasive materials technology area that I obtained have been enforced at the U.S. International Trade Commission.. I have also performed due diligence investigations for investors and companies considering acquiring large patent portfolios.. I have been practicing law since 1993, in pratically all areas from divorce and paternity, modifications, criminal defense, personal injury, probate, general civil litigation, and the llke. As a young lawyer, I started out taking any case that would get me in front of a jury. I knew I wanted to be a trial lawyer. I wanted to be comfortable in the court room. So, I tried all manner of criminal cases, civil contract cases, and personal injury cases. I started my law practice in Maine. After 10 years, I had twin daughters and moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. Since that time, my practice has focused on divorce, paternity and family law, and some criminal and civil law. I now have a son as well. My husband and I live with our three children and three dogs in Park City, Utah. We love to ski, hike, play baseball, softball, soccer, and any other sport that involves the outdoors. I have my own practice now, having practiced in small firms to large firms over the years. I find my joy in my family, and in helping my clients through some of the worst times of their life. The best part is the fact that they move through a process, and hopfully, at the end, continue to move forward in a more positive way. I have watched a spouse, mother or father, collapesed by divorce or separation, find love again, connect with their children again, and find their own joy again. I am grateful for those clients that stay in touch with me so I can share in their happiness.

I grew up in northern California about 15 minutes west of Oakland in the Walnut Creek/Concord area. It was awesome and miss it greatly. I met my wife at the University of Utah. Ironically, she was born roughly 30 miles from where I was born. I was born in Walnut Creek and my wife in Tracy. I played football, baseball and soccer growing up and was quite good at all three (not to brag, but this is an "about me" segment). I played junior college football and also coached varsity football for two years when I was younger. My second year of coaching we went undefeated. It was quite the experience. My lifelong dream is to simply coach high school football again.. My wife and I love movies and our daughter. We spend a great deal of time together and have a great marriage. I am blessed to be business partners with one of my best friends who is a great person, friend and attorney. I am blessed to have associations with very good people and examples in my circle of influence and hope to be worthy of their friendship.. As for my legal practice there is really only one thing you need to know, I love to win. It doesn't matter if it is a game of tennis, Jenga or a hearing. I hate losing, which is good for my clients.
I focus on estate planning, trust administration, probate administration, business organization set up and succession planning, tax planning and asset protection planning. I enjoy working with families to ensure their estate planning goals are met and properly administered.
I defend physicians, hospitals, nurses, dentists and other health care providers in medical malpractice lawsuits. Current clients include the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics and physicians employed by the University of Utah, which is the Intermountain West's only academic medical center, as well as the insurance carrier for over 90% of Utah dentists.
I counsel clients on corporate and securities laws, mergers and acquisitions, venture capital and private equity transactions, real estate transactions, business formation and corporate governance.
I believe that everybody deserves to be treated like they are the only client I have. I strive to provide a personal and in depth legal defense that is both aggressive and strategic. I have worked hard to gain the respect of colleagues whether they be fellow defense attorneys, state's attorneys or judges and I rely on those relationships, along with a thorough knowledge of the law and an aggressive and strategic defensive strategy, to find the best results in every case.
