Jim Whitehead lectures and writes frequently on a variety of legal issues.  He was for many years a member of the faculty of the Port of Seattle’s annual international trade seminar and was a member of the organizing committee of the Pacific Northwest Admiralty Law Institute, which for many years sponsored seminars on issues of interest to the maritime industry.  He has spoken at seminars sponsored by that Institute, the University of Washington School of Law, The Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia, and various insurance industry groups.  He chaired the International Maritime Law Conference held in Seattle in June 1996.  He is also the Associate Editor for Seattle of American Maritime Cases, which has published court decisions of interest to the maritime bar for more than ninety years.  He has been active for many years in the Maritime Law Association of the United States (MLA), serving a three-year term on its Board of Directors starting in May 2000, and serving on multiple ad hoc committees by special appointment of its President.  He is a member of the National Advisory Board of the Maritime Arbitration Association of the United States, a national association created in 2007 to provide cost-effective arbitration and mediation services in the maritime industry by specially qualified, experienced maritime lawyers.  He is one of two Seattle attorneys initially approved as arbitrators/mediators by the association and has served as an arbitrator in several disputes subject to the association’s rules.  He is also a contract arbitrator for NOAA’s Crab Rationalization Program for the Bering Sea Aleutian Island crab fisheries.. Jim specializes in the trial and creative resolution of substantial disputes for a diverse client base, including Fortune 500 companies and major e-commerce firms.  While much of his practice has focused on intellectual property, corporate, and commercial matters, Jim believes that knowing how to win a case – developing and executing a strategy to position a case for a win by motion if possible and by trial if not – is the most important skill of a lawyer handling complex litigation.. Jim teamed with David Bruce to establish Savitt Bruce & Willey LLP in 1999, after a nine-year tenure as a partner at Perkins Coie.  Jim began his career with the firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison in New York City before finding his way to the Great Northwest.  He is a graduate, magna cum laude, of the Georgetown University Law Center.. Outside of the office, Jim recently completed service as the Chairperson of the Pike Place Market Preservation & Development Authority (which owns and operates Seattle’s famed Pike Place Market) and is a past President of the Federal Bar Association of the Western District of Washington.

Jim learned the practice of personal injury law from his father in Kent, Washington, where together they represented clients from all walks of life. During those years Jim gained respect for the problems and issues his clients faced, and learned how to best counsel and represent them while achieving justice for their cause.. Jim’s practice eventually brought him to New York City, where he became trial counsel for various firms who sent their difficult cases to him when they knew the case was going to be tried to a jury. Jim Horne was born in Osaka, Japan but his family moved to Washington State when he was six months old. The rest of his life has been spent in the Northwest. He grew up in Parkland, near Tacoma, attended Gonzaga University in Spokane as an undergraduate, and received his J.D. from Willamette University School of Law in Salem, Oregon.. He has extensive federal and state trial and appellate experience involving a wide range of civil litigation matters throughout the Western United States. He has served as trial counsel in Product Liability claims involving various products including prescription medications;  medical devices; asbestos; urea-formaldehyde; Phentermine of the “Fen-Phen” diet drug combination; bone (pedicle) screws; the food supplements goldenseal and echinacea; football helmets; wall-mounted heaters; and other electrical equipment and appliances. He also has considerable experience with building and construction defect claims on behalf of contractors, building owners and occupants (condominiums, apartment buildings, hotels, parking and other facilities in the hospitality industry) as well as fire loss and property damage claims, including business interruption, loss of use, and loss of access claims.. Jim has extensive legal and management experience within the aviation industry, including Lead Counsel at Alaska Airlines and Senior Attorney at Trans World Airlines. He holds a commercial pilot license with over 2,500 hours and was the Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel of a regional Hawaiian airline, as well as Managing Partner of Waldon Law Group, a law practice with an aviation focus. His practice focuses on aircraft transactions and finance and Federal Aviation Administration regulatory matters, general business, and corporate law. He represents domestic airlines and business aircraft owners and operators. He assists clients in establishing appropriate operating structures for aircraft to comply with the Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration regulatory requirements and has represented numerous clients in regard to participation in fractional ownership programs. Jim earned his undergraduate degree in Sociology, with a minor in Native American Studies, from Western Washington University in 1996.  Jim earned his law degree from Western State University College of Law in 2005, graduating summa cum laude and valedictorian of his class.. In 1994, Jim began volunteer and civilian service in law enforcement, serving as a Sheriff Explorer Cadet, Police Dispatcher, Juvenile Probation Tracker, Drug Task Force Office Assistant, and as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff.  In 1997, Jim began sworn service as Deputy Sheriff, Detective, and Field Training Officer for the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.  Jim also served for three years on his Union’s negotiations team and executive board, holding positions of Second Vice-President and Secretary.  After Jim’s best friend and fellow Deputy died in the line of duty, Jim left law enforcement in 2002 to pursue a career in labor law.  Just prior to law school, Jim served as a Volunteer Firefighter for his community in Sun City, CA.. In 2005, Jim began representing public safety labor unions in both Washington and California, serving as a panel attorney for PORAC's Legal Defense Fund, as well as an Associate Attorney and Labor Consultant with the law firms of Lackie, Dammeier, & McGill (Upland, CA) and Cline & Associates (Seattle, WA).  In 2007, Jim began representing police and fire management as a Labor Relations Manager for the Port of Seattle.  Having been on both the union and management sides of labor, Jim has handled administrative disciplinary matters from the initial interview through the appeals process, responded to officer-involved shootings and critical incidents, negotiated collective bargaining agreements, and represented clients during administrative hearings, grievance arbitrations, and unfair labor practices.  Jim has also provided training on the legal rights of public sector employees in disciplinary proceedings, collective bargaining, and officer-involved collisions..
