I grew up in Michigan and knew I would go to law school after reading a biography of famous Chicago defense attorney Clarence Darrow. His stands for union workers, against the death penalty and his work on behalf of criminal defendants made him my hero.. After getting my undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan I went to law school at the University of Illinois. Following that I clerked for two different judges on the Illinois Supreme Court, Justice Stamos and Justice Miller, and learned a great deal of how the law works in real life.. I moved to Chicago, home of Clarence Darrow, and got my dream job--a public defender at the Cook County Public Defender's Office. I eventually tried over 50 jury cases, winning multiple cases from DUI's to drug, burglary, rape and murder trials. I was offered a position at a leading progressive law firm--People's Law Office-- that worked for innocent clients and sued the Chicago Police Department for false arrest, police brutality and wrongful convictions. I eventually made partner and was successful in getting an innocent client--Aaron Patterson--off death row after he was pardoned by Governor Ryan, following a successful appeal to the Illinois Supreme Court granting him a new hearing.. I was also able to free an innocent man from serving a 48 year prison sentence for a murder he did not commit by showing that he had been framed by a Chicago Police Officer.  His name was Rene Castillo and the case was People v. Castillo, 89 CR 2461.. In 2002 I moved to Seattle to take a job as an Assistant Federal Public Defender. I worked there for six years, winning a rape trial, and successfully getting a number of cases dismissed.. In 2008 I left the Federal Defender's Office to concentrate on my own practice in Federal Court, representing people in trials and appeals to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Since opening my own law firm I have had success in getting one federal charge dismissed completely (US v. Tho Le, CR12-00041RSL) as well as getting a number of charges reduced and sentences greatly lower then called for by the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.

I focus my practice on the representation of property owners whether corporations, limited liability companies, individuals or homeowners associations.  I am chair of the Construction Practice Team, serve on the Williams Kastner board of directors and am chair of the Loss Prevention Committee.  My recent trial success includes representation of General Metals of Tacoma, Inc in a contract dispute with its general contractor, Bean Environmental, LLC, on an environmental dredging project to remediate the Hylebos Waterway in Tacoma, Washington.  Following a five week jury trial in the United States District Court in the Western District of Washington, the jury awarded my client $6.37 million for damages sustained as a result of the general contractor’s failure to perform its contract obligations.  The decision in General Metals of Tacoma, Inc. v. Bean Environmental, LLC was upheld by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in November, 2008.. I was named to Super Lawyers from 2006 – 2008 by Washington Law & Politics magazine, and in 2003 was named one of Seattle’s Top Lawyers in construction law by Seattle Magazine.

I consider myself lucky to have spent a career in a field to which I was attracted as a child, and which still provides me with plenty of reasons to look forward to going to work each day. After 36 years of practice, certain lessons are learned.  One is that I simply enjoy this work.  I like mediating with parents that can work together.  It is fun to see them move from feeling overwhelmed to having a sense of control and hope for their futures.  I also enjoy the contested cases as they allow me to find ways to deal with an often difficult opposing spouse.  In both cases many clients return to normal life at the end of the case with a new understanding of themselves.  I cannot take credit for this.  It is their talent to make the best of a difficult situation that makes all the difference.. As an MSW social worker and a lawyer, I am interested in combining advocacy with insight to enhance my client’s capacity to deal with their ex-spouse and their children.. A native Washingtonian, Al grew up in Kent and graduated from Kent-Meridian High School. He graduated from Oberlin College with a degree in government (political philosophy) with high honors and then pursued graduate work in political philosophy at Yale University. Al then moved to New York City to work as a jazz bassist before attending Brooklyn Law School, where he served as Executive Articles Editor for the Brooklyn Law Review. Missing the Pacific Northwest, after earning his J.D., Al returned to Seattle with his new wife and served as law clerk to Judge Barbara Durham of the Washington State Court of Appeals for a year before becoming a Deputy Prosecutor with the Criminal Division of the King County Prosecutor’s Office.  Al served in that capacity for almost six years and tried numerous felony cases ranging from sexual assault and child abuse to homicides. In 1990, Al left the Prosecutor’s Office and spent the next 18 years as house counsel for major insurance companies and in private practice focusing on civil litigation and specifically, insurance defense and construction defect matters.. In 2008, Al opened his own solo law practice focusing almost exclusively on representing plaintiffs in various types of civil litigation, including personal injury matters, insurance coverage disputes, insurance bad faith litigation, and employment discrimination claims..
