I have adopted an income-based approach to legal fees I charge new clients. Every client is assessed at the first meeting to determine how much of a discount they will receive, and every client who has a household income less than $100,000 will receive a discount, some up to 40% off of my standard hourly rate.. This is my attempt to align hourly rates with what people can actually afford to pay, and even extends to the retainer, which is calculated based upon ten hours at the discounted hourly rate.. A brief bit about me.... I am the first person in my family to attend college and went into the Army right out of high school to see the world and figure out some way to pay for college. I was an intelligence analyst and viewed as one of the best in the world at my particular area. At age 22, I was delivering high level presentations to military leaders in Korea regarding the intelligence planning for major military exercises.. I left the military to attend college. I attended Seattle University where I majored in Finance and International Business. As I contemplated which path to take for grad school, I chose law school, viewing law school as a unique skill set that would benefit me in the corporate world.. During my second year of law school, I was hired by a large Canadian corporation that had purchased a business in Seattle and wanted someone to develop a strategic growth plan for the business unit. This led to a permanent job offer and a relocation to Toronto following graduation.. I left the company in 2002 and started my own practice in Tacoma. From the beginning, I have been committed to providing value to my clients through hard work, reasonable rates and desired results.. Today, my practice is focused on the following areas:. Family Law. Trusts and Estate. WIlls and Probate

It's essential to get a good sense of what we're all about. Beyond being aware of what type of law we practice, defining who we are is just as important. Obviously, selecting a criminal defense attorney is a critical decision. A firm with experience is, no doubt, a must have – however, it's crucial to work with a firm you're comfortable with, and have the utmost confidence in.. We believe that the Blanford Law attitude and approach set us apart. And, our owner and lead attorney, Ken Blanford, exemplifies the essence of the firm. Put simply, Ken is passionate about connecting with clients on a personal level. He fosters relationships without assumptions, without preconceived notions, and he focuses on establishing a deep rapport with every individual he represents.. Taking the lead from Ken, we are a firm where what you see is what you get – in the best sense of the phrase. We are no-nonsense and relentless, yet we maintain pride in being fair and honest. Maybe opposite of what you're prepared to expect from attorneys, here at Blanford Law we're great listeners instead of fast talkers – that's just who we are.. With over 10 years of defense experience, Blanford Law represents clients across Washington: King, Pierce, Kitsap, Kittitas, Jefferson, Thurston, Snohomish, Yakima, Lewis, Island, Cowlitz, Clallam, Chelan, Grant, Whitman, Walla-Walla, Skamania, Clark, Grays Harbor, Okanogan, Spokane, Skagit and Mason Counties, as well as Seattle and Tacoma Federal District Court.
Interest in Law and Serving Community. I was born in Tacoma and raised in the Northwest. I’ve traveled around the US, including a three year stint in Los Angeles, and I’ve traveled abroad too: by taking advantage of study abroad programs I spent months in Europe and South America. But there’s no place quite like my home town, Tacoma. Small town feel with the perks of big city living; Tacoma really is, as singer-songwriter Neko Case said, “a dusty old jewel in South Puget Sound.”. My love for my community complements my interest in business. Businesses have a great opportunity in Tacoma— I want to help others realize that opportunity.. Of course, running a business is not without difficulty, risk, and conflict. My passion is counseling individuals and businesses in crisis, providing navigation from conflict to conflict resolution. My ultimate goal is to provide resolute and enthusiastic risk management, negotiation, or litigation of business disputes. After ten years working in the service industry, including three years as a manager, I have experienced the importance of maintaining a sense of urgency and grace under pressure. These skills are invaluable when responding to crisis.. Similarly, defending clients charged with crimes requires experience to responding to crisis. After representing hundreds of clients, I have experience using evidentiary/ factual and legal issues as tools for negotiatons, successful motions, and at trial. I dedicate a significant portion of my pracice to DUI/DWI defense.. My experience includes numerous court appearances on behalf of clients, negotiation of favorable settlements, discovery, and pre-trial motions. My professional work extends to a commitment to pro bono services. I volunteer twice a month in the settlement and litigation of eviction matters for low-income individuals and families in South King County.. Becoming a lawyer has empowered me to make a real difference in the lives of business people in the community that I love. I am thankful every day for this opportunity and challenge.. Primary Practice Areas. My primary practice areas are DUI/DWI, business dispute resolution, including litigation and litigation defense, criminal defense, commercial landlord/tenant, copyright law, trademark law and entertainment law.. I am licensed to practice law in Washington.. Interests and Hobbies. When I’m away from work, I enjoy reading, playing bass guitar, and staying active–enjoying the outdoors and exercising. I dream of one day building a sail boat by hand.
In sixteen years of practice I have successfully tried dozens of jury trials in both state and federal court. I have argued at the Washington Supreme Court and the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. I believe there are no unwinnable cases, and that oral advocacy skills in the courtroom are secondary to the research and analysis necessary to weaken the opponent’s case and ultimately achieve the best result for the client. I am licensed to practice law in all Washington State courts, as well as federally, in both the Western and Eastern Districts of Washington. Feel free to give me a call and give me the opportunity to fight for you.
