I have a master’s degree from the London School of Economics, and a law degree from Florida State University. After law school, I worked in the private sector for two years prior to joining the Social Security Administration (SSA) in 2010. Iworked at the Appeals Council for almost four years, reviewing thousands of disability decisions for compliance with SSA’s complex rules and procedures. Ithen worked at the hearing level for seven years, where I drafted almost 2,000 decisions for SSA Administrative Law Judges. After working for SSA for more than 10 years, I wanted to help demystify the complicated disability system. My first book, Social Security Disability Revealed: Why it’s so hard to access benefits and what you can do about it, explores the obstacles that disability claimants face as they try to access benefits.

I grew up in Tacoma and have practiced law in my hometown for over 31 years.  I have been a member of the firm of Rush, Hannula, Harkins & Kyler, LLP, since I graduated from University of Washington Law School in 1977.  Since that time, I have dedicated my law practice to representing injured persons in Western Washington. I have considerable experience in cases of medical negligence, wrongful death, brain injury, truck accidents, auto accidents, construction site accidents and swimming and diving accidents.  I have also been very active in my state and local bar associations.. I attended Woodrow Wilson High School in Tacoma, where I was a member of the swimming and water polo teams and was awarded All American honors in my junior and senior years.  I attended the University of Washington on a swimming scholarship from 1970 through 1974, and was awarded All American honors in 1971, 1972, and 1973.  From 1969 through 1972, I was ranked in the top 20 in the world in the 200-meter freestyle.  I have been married to my wife Margaret, who I met at the University of Washington, for 33 years.  We have 3 adult children, Holly, Adam and Ben.

I grew up in Idaho but fell in love with the water, mountains, and trees of the Pacific Northwest during a legal internship in Tacoma. My wife and I moved here in 2017, and we have never looked back. I am a father to a young daughter who believes she owns the house and to a son who believes he owns his sister. I watches all sports with a ball and have even wandered into the realm of gymnastics due to my wife’s passion. I grew up here in Tacoma, and came back after my military service and law school to practice in my home town. I spent the last two years of law school working full time, while taking classes, as a legal intern so that I could hit the ground running for my clients from day 1. When I'm not in the office, or in court, I'm either training for my next Tough Mudder run, practicing my guitar (believe me, I need the practice), or enjoying time with my friends and family.

I earned my J.D., cum laude, from the Seattle University School of Law in 2009. During law school, I served as an intern for the Ronald E. Peterson Indian Trusts and Estates Legal Clinic, advising elderly clients seeking assistance with their estate planning needs, which inlcuded advice regarding property distribution, advanced healthcare directives, and DPOAs. Moreover, while attending law school school, I worked as a Rule 9 Intern at Graham Lundberg and Peschel, performing trial support for personal injury litigation alongside plaintiff's attorneys.. Prior to attending law school, I graduated from the University of Washington, with honors, with a degree in Political Science. I have demonstrated a continued commitment to social justice in my ongoing volunteer efforts with the Eastside Legal Assistance Program and the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project. At ELAP, I provided legal assistance to victims of domestic violence by assisting them with the drafting of pleadings, coaching clients in preparation for court appearances, and the helping them to develop legal strategies in preparation for trial. I don't know about you but my life seems to be a series of check this box and sign on the dotted line.  This is especially becoming prevalent in the age of turbo tax like Estate Plans.  Online programs are great when you are filling out forms.  But you and your life are not and should not be reduced to a series of forms.  Forms cannot tell someone who should take care of your child following your passing, how your silver spoon collection should be distributed, or what music to play at your funeral.  With my education centered approach you will never be reduced to a series of forms but rather I will assist you in creating a one of a kind estate plan which transcends your final passing.

I began my legal career working as a defense attorney for an insurance company. Through taking cases to trial and countless arbitrations, I saw first-hand how insurance companies can quickly lose sight of the human aspect of injury and insurance claims, viewing cases merely as business concerns to be settled cheaply or hard-fought, regardless of cost. Later in my career, I defended insurance companies in bad faith litigation.
