“One person with passion is better than forty people merely interested.”. — E. M. Forster. Attorney Cheryl Van Ackeren is passionate about protecting the rights of service members and ensuring that veterans get the benefits they deserve.. Long before graduating from Seattle University’s School of Law, Cheryl knew she wanted to be a lawyer. Cheryl enlisted in the Army at 18 to achieve her goal and hoped to take advantage of the “green to gold” program to become an officer, and eventually, a Judge Advocate General. Cheryl’s military career began in the signal corps with the 1st Calvary Division, Fort Hood, Tx. Her enlistment included a 15 month deployment to Iraq during the early days of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Unfortunately, Cheryl’s career in the service ended after almost four years of service, when she became injured. Due to a medical discharge, she would not be able to be a JAG officer and serve the Army as a lawyer. Cheryl didn’t miss a beat. After returning to civilian life, she promptly enrolled in school, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology before attending Seattle University’s School of Law.. In law school, Cheryl knew she wanted to be an advocate for veterans and work as a defense attorney early on. From May 2010, after her first year of law school, Cheryl worked as a legal intern with Charlie Swift at Swift & McDonald, PS, a firm that focused on military law and family law for service members. As a legal intern, Cheryl handled Board of Correction cases,court-martial cases, administrative separations, Appeals to nonjudicial punishments and Letters of Reprimand, as well assecurity clearances cases, and assisted with Family law Divorce and Child Custody cases for almost three years. Cheryl further expanded her knowledge by working with the Northwest Justice Project, Veterans Division, where she provided legal aid to homeless veterans and veterans on the verge of homelessness. Cheryl’s determination and strong work ethic allowed her to work at Swift & McDonald, PS and the Northwest Justice Project while attending school. After Cheryl’s externship with the Northwest Justice Project ended, she continued on solely as a legal intern at Swift & McDonald, PS, eventually becoming an associate after she graduated from Seattle University School of Law in May 2013.. Cheryl’s passion for legal matters that affect service members and veterans is not her only passion. She is also has a labor of love about snowboarding, dancing, and spending time with her husband and son. She is an avid camper, who loves a good hike through nature or a long road trip to new locations. Cheryl’s passion and sense of adventure serves her well both in and out of the office.

Biography:. During high school Travis was focused on getting out of Montana and seeing the world. After the fall of communism and the collapse of the Soviet Bloc crushed his desire to serve on the Berlin Wall; Travis decided to join the Navy. “The Navy was, and still is in my opinion, the best place for a young person to discover their full potential.” said Travis. During his time in the Navy, he was given the opportunity to work with all of the wonderful staff of the legal department on his ship as a Master-at-Arms, and this nurtured his ambition to become an attorney. It was also during this time that he had the opportunity to work in the Puget Sound and fell in love with the region and its people.. During undergraduate and law school, he worked to support his family at various positions including UPS, the Boilermaker’s Union, several property management and construction firms and caring for the handicapped as a CNA. These experiences left him with a deep appreciation for what is required to make-ends-meet and the difficulties inherent in providing the best for your family during hard times.. Taking advantage of every opportunity to learn, Travis worked hard at his studies and earned high honors in his undergraduate courses, and in pursuit of a well-rounded legal education, completed many more credits of learning than were required to graduate from law school.. Travis is an honest and straightforward advocate for his clients and is unafraid to aggressively advance their interests. He understands that, “At the end of the day, I have to justify my time and actions, not only to my clients, but to myself and our society as well.” said Travis. He strives to always be responsive to his client’s questions and concerns and prides himself on being available for them on their time schedule. He acknowledges that not everyone works 9 to 5 schedules and for those that don’t, they deserve something more than a 9 to 5 attorney.. Travis has practiced exclusively in Family Law as an attorney and would not have it any other way. “The field of Family Law has offered me some of the most challenging, frustrating, but ultimately rewarding experiences of my life. I left the Navy to pursue a career that would allow me to engage with others and have a positive impact on their lives; our law offices gives me the opportunity to see this goal become a reality.” said Travis.. Groves Law Office has the ability and experience to handle any type of Washington Family Law matter and is dedicated to providing affordable legal representation. There are no boilerplate results in family law. I approach family law cases with an open mind and learn as much about the client as possible. By allowing the client to tell his or her story, we can identify the issues unique to the case and determine the best course of action to get the client the results needed.

Kelly LeBlanc has been practicing law for over 35 years. She has been admitted to practice in five (5) jurisdictions and appeared on behalf of litigants at the state and federal level. She served as an Administrative Health Law Judge with the Department of Health and worked as a Guardian ad Litem (GAL) in Pierce County many years before joining Envision Family Law Group as Senior Counsel. When the Court was faced with particularly difficult cases, Kelly was often designated to investigate and provide recommendations on how best to protect the interests of the child(ren) involved.. As a GAL, Kelly served as the court’s designated expert in hundreds of cases relating to child custody. She was routinely subject to cross-examination in contested family law proceedings and experienced trial tactics by dozens of her colleagues both as a witness and advocate. While serving as a Health Law Judge for the Department of Health, Kelly presided over licensing and disciplinary proceedings involving medical doctors, dentists, therapists and other health care providers facing charges under the Uniform Disciplinary Act. In this role, Kelly was charged with the responsibility for making evidentiary rulings and ensuring fairness and integrity in conduct of proceedings.. Kelly has not only experienced what it feels like from the witness box, she has also experienced the challenges facing the fact finders in judicial proceedings. Thus, Kelly understands the importance of preparing cases in a way that will afford her the ability to defend her work and recommendations down to the smallest detail and her experience as GAL provides her with a unique vantage point, or “head start”, from which to prepare her own clients.. When Kelly is in the courtroom, she dominates with her smart, direct and thorough legal arguments while maintaining the utmost professionalism. Kelly tempers her natural perfectionism with efficiency, yet takes the time to ensure that her clients are well-informed throughout each aspect of the case. Her skill and work ethic is widely respected within the legal community. While serving as a neutral investigator, Kelly established herself as someone who could be trusted and along with that, developed good rapport with the Judges, Commissioners, and supporting staff. Kelly has a wide range of experience which helps her formulate arguments, theories, and themes that resonate with the Court. Kelly has a deep understanding of the issues confronting families during divorce and custody cases and can provide seasoned advice on how to address concerns with domestic violence, chemical dependency, or complex medical or mental health issues. She has in-depth knowledge of programs and resources available through DSHS, JBLM Family Advocacy and a well-developed network of private resources who provide support and assistance for families and children facing difficult times.. Kelly and her husband came to Washington in 1995. They have had the joy (“most of the time,” says Kelly) of raising six children but are now "empty nesters" and grandparents! Three of her children still reside here in Washington so that made the transition from "full house" to a "much roomier (and generally cleaner) one" a little easier. Kelly and her husband both enjoy cooking though she admits: “I like cooking even more when he does it.” During her leisure time, she loves hosting family and friends at social gatherings or taking off to go camping. She also enjoys running, hiking, bicycling, hanging out with friends, and simply relaxing with a good book when she’s not working.. Don't forget to ask about Kelly's special reduced rates for active duty military members!

I have adopted an income-based approach to legal fees I charge new clients. Every client is assessed at the first meeting to determine how much of a discount they will receive, and every client who has a household income less than $100,000 will receive a discount, some up to 40% off of my standard hourly rate.. This is my attempt to align hourly rates with what people can actually afford to pay, and even extends to the retainer, which is calculated based upon ten hours at the discounted hourly rate.. A brief bit about me.... I am the first person in my family to attend college and went into the Army right out of high school to see the world and figure out some way to pay for college. I was an intelligence analyst and viewed as one of the best in the world at my particular area. I attended Seattle University where I majored in Finance and International Business. As I contemplated which path to take for grad school, I chose law school, viewing law school as a unique skill set that would benefit me in the corporate world.. During my second year of law school, I was hired by a large Canadian corporation that had purchased a business in Seattle and wanted someone to develop a strategic growth plan for the business unit. This led to a permanent job offer and a relocation to Toronto following graduation.. I left the company in 2002 and started my own practice in Tacoma. From the beginning, I have been committed to providing value to my clients through hard work, reasonable rates and desired results.. Today, my practice is focused on the following areas:. Family Law. Trusts and Estate. WIlls and Probate
