The Difference. My law practice is different than many others because it's dedicated solely to criminal defense and medical marijuana law.  So, I'm not spread out with multiple areas of practice like a lot of other attorneys.. Secondly, I'm able to give personal, one-on-one attention to my clients. I do this first with a free initial consultation. You won't have your case assigned to a junior attorney or have little contact with me, leaving you wondering what's going on with your case.. Criminal Defense. I've been representing people with legal needs for nearly two decades. But the number of years that an attorney has practiced isn't the only important experience factor. You'll get an attorney with the RIGHT KIND of experience. When it comes to being charged with a crime, you want someone who focuses on criminal defense. Think about it. Would you hire a divorce attorney to handle your criminal charge? Of course not.. You'll get a strategic fighter. I aggressively represent my clients. I dig into the evidence or the lack of it. I look for holes in the prosecutor's case and I work to get unfavorable evidence thrown out. I rock the boat and challenge the prosecutor and law enforcement while still adhering to professionalism and ethical practices.. Medical Marijuana Law. Oklahomans legalized medical marijuana in June 2018 through the approval of State Question 788 (SQ 788). But I was way ahead of the game. Even before SQ 788 passed, I was a Legal Committee member of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), and I still am today. I gained a wealth of knowledge and experience in marijuana law well before SQ 788 passed. And, I have knowledge and experience with the new medical marijuana laws and regulations. I even offer compliance auditing services for Oklahoma medical marijuana dispensaries, growers and processors.. The Bottom Line. So, when you hire me, you know that you have a knowledgable, experienced and skilled attorney on your side. Call me at to schedule your free initial consultation. Steven D. Swant takes his role as an advocate very seriously. He understands that when he is retained to represent a person, his function as Attorney and Counselor at Law is to act as that person’s voice in the courtroom and to counsel that person as to the best course of action considering all factors that may potentially affect the course of their life. Mr. Swant believes  very strongly that people have the right to live their lives free of unreasonable government  actions. My entire legal career has been dedicated to the protection of your sacred Constitutional rights.  I have been a criminal defense attorney for my entire legal career.  I am very proud to say that I have never been a prosecutor and will never be a prosecutor.  I am not a shyster that says you need to go to prison one day and then suddenly the next day says that I am all for your rights and all for drug law reform.  I do not dabble in criminal defense and divorce and personal injury and bankruptcy and whatever else.  All I do is criminal defense, and I am very experienced and capable at it.  I have handled every type of criminal case from simple traffic tickets to 1st degree murder.  I take a special interest in drug cases, especially marijuana cases.

If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. With over 30 years' experience providing a wide range of legal services to individuals and businesses of all types, I have a lot of legal tools, and I take pride in using the right tool for each client's needs, not just what's handy or most obvious.. I am committed to providing quality legal services, tailored specifically to each client's needs, at reasonable prices set up front so you know up front exactly what to expect and what it will cost - No surprises! I am also committed to providing those services quickly and efficiently in a way that is convenient for you and respectful of your time. Why waste your time and your money on someone who insists on being rigid, formal and inefficient?. Finally, I am committed to practical, straightforward, proven solutions. I haven't just studied these things in books. I have litigated just about every type of document that I draft and transaction that I handle. That means I have first-hand real world experience with what really works - what will protect my clients' interests, keep them out of court, and stand up in court when litigation cannot be avoided - and what won't.. Most of my work has been helping banks, other businesses and individuals negotiate, document and complete business transactions and helping businesses and individuals resolve business disputes through litigation or mediation. I also help clients form, organize, buy and sell businesses. I also help individuals plan for the orderly disposition of their estates, and I help with the administration and distribution of estates.. I am a 1987 graduate of the University of Oklahoma, where I received a Bachelors of Business Administration degree (with Distinction) in Accounting, and I received my Juris Doctor degree, with Honors, from the University of Oklahoma College of Law in 1990, where I was a member of the Order of the Coif.. I understand what it is like to struggle. I grew up poor and I have worked for everything that I have. My father was a steel worker and my grandfather was a sharecropper. Growing up I wrestled, boxed, played football and baseball.. I am a veteran and served in the Navy. I worked my way through college washing dishes, delivering newspapers, delivering pizzas, repossessing cars, and bouncing in bars.. I'm married with two daughters. I work hard to give my daughters the opportunities that I never had.. I have had over 30 jury trials as lead counsel. I have tried cases in state and federal court. I continually work hard to improve my skills as a trial attorney. I attended Gerry Spence's Trial Lawyer college. I read trial practice books, psychology books, communication books; anything that will improve my trial skills.. Other than the law; I love cigars, baseball and photography. (In that order.)

I am orignially from Fairbanks, AK, a blue collar town in the middle of nowhere.  Growing up in an atmosphere like Fairbanks contributed alot to the person that I am today. It instilled in me a strong work ethic, even in highschool if you weren't working 60 hrs a week during the summer time then your friends would joke that you had an easy job, that carries over to my practice today. Growing up in Fairbanks also instilled a sense of self reliance and a drive to overcome obtacles that has stayed with me through out my life.. Many people ask "How'd you end up all the way down here in Oklahoma?" My family is orginally from Oklahoma going all the back to the land rush days. My parents, grandparents, and Aunt and Uncle all moved to Alaska in the late 70's to pursue new oppurntunities in the last frontier.  After highschool I spen several years playing Junior hockey and finally had to realize that a sports career was never going to pay the bills. Upon that realization I knew I had to look to a career and didn't want to work in the bitter cold of the oild fields of Northern Alaska.  My sister was attending OU at the time and filled out an application for me and it came back that I was accepted, so off I went.. I graduated from OU in 4 years and then attended the University of Tulsa College of Law where I graduated in 2006. I had orginally planned to move to Washington State to be closer to home and passed the bar examination there before deciding that I would return to OKlahoma. I was licensed to practice law in OKlahoma in 2007 and immediately began working as an Assisstant Attorney General for the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. I worked for the Nation for approximately 1 1/2 years before leavine to open up my own firm in 2008.. I have tried over a dozen jury trials, in both state and federal court, from misdemeanor assault and battery cases to a death penalty case. I am constantly trying to improve my trial skills by attending various seminars (e.g. Gerry Spence Trial Lawyers College Death Penalty Course, Colorado Method of Voir Dire in Boulder colorado as well as the Pat Williams Criminal Defense Institute).. I am currently married and have 2 children.. My practice focuses entirely on criminal law and I am dedicated to protecting the rights of my clients above all else.
