Knowledgable, calculated, prepared.  Success in a divorce litigation involves several factors.. Knowing the law and knowing the facts are key to succeeding in a divorce case.  No amount of courtroom bravado can make up for a failure to grasp the key facts, law and issues in a case.  I keep up to date by writing and editing Gitlin on Divorce Reports, a semi-monthly newsletter reporting on every Illinois family law case.  I also speak frequently, especially regarding tax and financial issues in divorce.. Knowledge needs to be applied to be useful.  Taking this knowledge, understanding it and applying it to the client's case helps me in creating better projections and calculations for clients.  With more information and a more accurate picture of possible outcomes, clients can make better decisions.. Finally, I believe being prepared is perhaps the most important factor.  Doing the legwork, collecting the evidence, understanding the evidence and reviewing preparation with the client are steps I use to ensure I am fully prepared each time I walk into a meeting or hearing.  I cannot always be smarter than opposing counsel, but I can always try to be more prepared.

I joined the Woodstock office of Meriwether & Tharp, LLC in January 2016, after having my office in Cobb County since 1996.  My practice area has always included all counties in the North Metro Atlanta area, as well as Fulton County and the City of Atlanta.  I do my best to represent my clients in a diligent and professional manner.  I do this by providing them with my best advice for their particular situation, based upon my knowledge of the law and my many years of experience in Divorce and Family Law.  All cases are different, but they generally follow certain themes and trends, and my experience allows me to detect those themes and trends and develop the best approach for a particular client.. I co-founded Meriwether & Tharp, LLC with Robert “Bob” Tharp in 1998. In the beginning, the firm was just two young lawyers who thought that they could make a difference by teaming up together. At present, we are the largest family law firm in the state of Georgia. The firm has over 40 lawyers dedicated to helping clients get through difficult times.. In 2009, we surveyed the family law landscape and decided to make a change. We began to develop a vision of a better way to practice family law. As our vision became a reality, the firm grew.. As the practice grew, our team honed our courtroom skills to zealously advocate for our clients. But, more importantly, we learned that lawyers should work to resolve most family law cases. In some respects, working to resolve cases is much more challenging than litigating the cases. It requires digging in to find out where the problems are and looking for solutions. Often solutions are found outside of the confines of the legal system.. In addition to working to resolve the case, we also help our clients perform a three step cost-benefit analysis of their situation to help them make wise decisions. First, we help the client understand the legal strengths and weaknesses of a their case. Next, we discuss with the client the financial repercussions and costs of pursuing a specific litigation plan. And finally, we explore the long term 'emotional' price of any particular plan. The emotional price can include the value of ending a case earlier so that the client can move on with their life. The emotional price can also include the toll protracted litigation can have on children.. We are here to help. Sometimes that help involves giving the clients certain tools to save their marriage and never hire us. We love it when that opportunity comes along.. When I am not helping someone with their divorce, or trying to save their marriage, you will find me with my wife and kids or in my woodworking shop.  On a personal level, I hold a Black Belt in Judo and was the State Champion in my division while in law school.  I was active in my sons’ Cub Scouts and Boy Scout activities.  I was also the den leader for both my sons and ran the Pack’s Cub Mobile Race (with 99 scouts) for five years in a row.  I have built my children’s bedroom furniture; our kitchen table; end tables; an entire suite of furniture on our back porch including a swing bed; and even my office desk out of Ambrosia Maple.  In my spare time, I also enjow using my woodworking skills to craft individualized and unique pens. Chris is an alumni of the University of Georgia where he majored in International Business with a minor in Spanish. He received an M.B.A. from Kennesaw State University while working in procurement and logistics for an international engineering firm prior to earning his Juris Doctorate at Atlanta's John Marshall Law School.. Chris is a native of Clemson, South Carolina, but has lived in Georgia for over 25 years. Chris lives in Marietta with his wife, 2 kids, and their dog and cat. When not practicing the law Chris enjoys spending time with family including serving as Cubmaster for his children's Cub Scout pack, playing soccer, international travel, and supporting the Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta United, and Georgia Bulldogs.
