My practice is focused on the areas of Business Bankruptcy, Real Estate, Business Litigation, Creditor/Debtor Negotiation, and other General Business work, oftentimes within the context of Chapter 11 Reorganizations. I assist companies that are in need of financial restructuring--whether in or outside of bankruptcy court--and help them to continue operating and preserve their assets and assemble a business plan that will allow them to succeed.. I also deal with matters involving general business litigation, commercial leasing, non-compete agreements, LLC and business formation, foreclosure and out-of-court workout cases, estate planning, real estate transactional work, and taxation issues involving distressed real estate.. Outside of the office, I enjoy many of the things Milwaukee has to offer: running and biking by the lakefront, attending MSO and broadway shows at the Marcus Center, cheering on Marquette at the Bradley Center, and enjoying the many farmers markets and community events througout the season. I have previously served on the Board of my downtown condo building and have been involved with the Milwaukee Young Lawyers Association.

I've been practicing law since 1995, and I love what I do. I love my work because I thrive off of helping others. Though the money is certainly nice and provides a very comfortable lifestyle, I did not become an attorney to get rich - I became one so that I would have an interesting livelihood with which I could validate my own existence in the universe by doing meaningful things for folks in need of help while fully utilizing all of my language and "people" skills. Unlike a lot of other attorneys, I take the time to provide my clients such quality services as making house calls (not just for the sick or elderly), and I personally return each and every client's telephone call and e-mail reasonably promptly, if not immediately. With the exception of bankruptcy-client cases, no one ever touches my files but me. I do have people helping me out at any given time with the administration of my law practice, but only my hands touch my non-bankruptcy files. I am the only one who drafts my criminal-defense and family-law clients' paperwork, not some paralegal. When a client retains me to handle his or her case in court, I am the one who goes to court for that client, not an associate attorney working for me. And I am the one who is in charge of taking and answering my telephone messages on my direct line. I do everything myself for my clients because modern technology allows me to, and because past experiences have taught me that letting somebody else do work on my cases can lead to sloppy carelessness below the high standards that I adopted from half a decade of military service during the cold war. I realize that what I do for people is very serious business; I take each and every client's case equally as seriously, no matter how much or how little is at stake for each one because everybody's case is important. Another reason that I can do everything for my clients myself and take such good care of them personally is because I am very selective with the number of legal matters that I take on at any given time, unlike other lawyers I know who pile so many cases onto their desks that they end up spreading themselves far too thinly to give their clients the close attention, care and results that I give mine! Click to read a few newspaper articles about some of my legal victories. Also, click to read a poem that one of my actual clients has published on about the quality of the service and care I provide.
I was raised in both Wisconsin and North Carolina, which explains both my passion for Kringle and love of college hoops. I attended Earlham College (Richmond, Indiana) and North Carolina State University(Raleigh, North Carolina) for my undergraduate studies and earned my bachelor's degree from the latter. I was able to study briefly in Krasnodar, Russia, during a very exciting time as that country transitioned out of the cold war.. Along with my family's support and various forms of financial aid, I put myself through college and law school working a variety of jobs such as server, bartender, salesperson, organizational consultant, and as an improvisational comedian. This variety served me well; I learned about various occupations, the value of hard work and how to work smart because my time is valuable.. To complete my formal education, I attended law school at the University of North Carolina School of Law. During those years, I had numerous experiences that helped teach me what it means to be an attorney and an advocate for my clients. During my first summer and during the year, I had the privilege of clerking for my personal legal hero, Raymond Mason Taylor, Esq., of Raleigh, North Carolina. Mr. Taylor's decades of experience as a respected and successful attorney allowed him to be a mentor to me. His advice still sounds in my head on a nearly daily basis as I perform work for my clients today.. I spent my second law school summer at Pamlico Sound Legal Services. At Pamlico Sound, I assisted clients who were struggling in the aftermath of Hurricane Floyd with FEMA and state claims. The work was rewarding and challenging and I extended my internship well beyond the original agreement to continue working with the people of Eastern North Carolina to recover from the storm.. During law school, I also clerked for my criminal law professor, Arnold H. Loewy, and contributed research for his third edition of Criminal Law in a Nutshell (2003).. After three years of course work, participation in Moot Court, involvement in various volunteer activities, and a brief study abroad observing the institutions of the European Union, I was honored with my Juris Doctor in May 2001.

I started my legal career as a staff attorney at the Indianapolis office of Indiana Legal Services, where I practiced consumer, family, and landlord-tenant law. This experience was invaluable. Because Legal Services provides free legal services to qualified individuals, the budget was not extensive. I was able to choose interesting cases and dive right in to practicing law whereas in a more traditional firm environment I might have been expected to spend more time observing or supporting more experienced attorneys.. I moved to Chicago in 2003 to take a job with a growing law firm specializing in consumer bankruptcy. I started by taking Chapter 7 and 13 cases and working with clients. Eventually, I managed the practice for Northern Indiana, with offices in Merrillville, Fort Wayne, South Bend, and Elkhart, Indiana. Later, at the same firm, I was asked to train and manage a number of offices across the country. I have continued to work with attorneys and clients at my former firm. I have traveled across the United States and worked with people in Manhattan, Miami, Las Vegas, San Francisco and a variety of less exciting locations in between.. In 2010, I moved back to Wisconsin. I chose to live in Milwaukee because of family connections and because I simply love Wisconsin...even when it snows. Fueled by a desire to spend more time with clients and less time in airports, I opened the Law Offices of Deborah A. Stencel in summer 2011. In 2016, I joined Miller and Miller Law in Milwaukee where I am privileged to work with a team of caring and dedicated professionals.
I created my firm with one goal in mind: to help everyday people and business owners solve any legal problems and issues that they may face. My office is a full-service practice to help clients, their friends, and families. I value all of the relationships I have built over my many years of serving the people of Southern Wisconsin.. I am an experienced attorney with over 39 years of experience in private practice in Wisconsin. I have helped clients with a wide range of legal issues. I have successfully helped clients achieve their goals in Family Law, Criminal and Traffic Defense, and litigation in commercial and probate cases.. I also help people and business and real estate owners solve their financial problems by way of collection, foreclosure defense, bankruptcy, both Chapter 7 and Chapter 13, and eviction.. I can also help with estate planning, home and business purchases and sales, and personal injury, along with guardianship issues.. You may ask, how can one person do all of this, and do it well? It is from my many years of experience in Wisconsin Law, having dealt with these areas of law multiple times.. As a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a Bachelors' Degree in Finance, and a Law Degree, I feel privileged to serve our community, and look forward to helping you and your family.

The case, filed by the Southeast Wisconsin Professional Baseball Park District, sought $50 million in damages from Mitsubishi for alleged defects in the retractable roof, which Mitsubishi constructed. Mitsubishi denied liability and filed a counterclaim seeking additional costs incurred in constructing the roof due to material changes made to the roof's design by the Baseball Park District's architect-of-record after Mitsubishi bid the job. In late 2004, following three years of contentious litigation, the parties attemptedmediation. After three days of mediation involving 22 attorneys from seven states, a settlement was reached in January 2005, resulting in Mitsubishi paying nothing on the Baseball Park District’s claims and receiving $18 million on its counterclaim.. • Also represented Mitsubishi, post verdict and on appeal, in connection with the insurance issues presented in the ironworker death cases likewise brought in Milwaukee County Circuit Court arising out of the construction of Miller Park. At Kerkman & Dunn, our team of attorneys offers a depth of experience you would only otherwise find at a large firm. As a small firm, we provide personalized and hands-on attention to each client and are able to avoid conflicts. With our skilled business litigation lawyers, our team has the bandwidth to handle even the most complicated business litigation and bankruptcy issues.. Jerry's interest in chapter 11 cases and business litigation began during his third year of law school, more than 30 years ago. He interned with Judge C.N. Clevert who was a bankruptcy judge at the time and later became a district court judge in Milwaukee. While in law school, Jerry wrote a law review article that studied the effects of the then new 1978 Bankruptcy Code in chapter 11 cases. The article was published as the lead article in the Marquette Law Review: The Debtor in Full Control: A Case for Adoption of the U.S. Trustee System, 70 Marq. L. Rev. 159 (1987).. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin law school, Jerry immediately represented chapter 11 debtors with a mid-size Milwaukee firm and eventually worked for one of the largest firms in Milwaukee before founding Kerkman & Dunn in 2006. Kerkman & Dunn grew to be one of the most successful chapter 11 boutique firms in the Midwest and in May of 2017 was joined by the lawyers from Wagner Law Group, a litigation boutique in Milwaukee to become Kerkman Wagner & Dunn. It practices bankruptcy throughout the State of Wisconsin and in Northern Illinois, and has represented large chapter 11 debtors in bankruptcy courts in Madison, Wausau, Chicago and of course Milwaukee.. Jerry and Kerkman Wagner & Dunn have represented creditors' committees, individual creditors and chapter 11 debtors. Their approach is often innovative. For example, the leading case to consolidate a large number of chapter 11 debtors into a smaller, more manageable number of debtors was approved recently by the bankruptcy and district courts in Milwaukee in the Bruckner decision. Jerry has also developed and led claim processes that took a large number of claims and resolved disputes to them with minimal court hearings. The firm's approach to cases usually results in a confirmed plan of reorganization because it emphasizes a business approach to cases; before filing a case, the exit strategy must be known.. Jerry and the firm look forward to the challenges of complex chapter 11 cases and obtaining a positive result for their clients.
