My focus is on family law, collaborative law, divorce mediation, and care and protection matters. I believe that family law is the most important and rewarding area of law in which a lawyer can practice. It is also an area of law in which clients need experienced, skilled, and compassionate representation to help them navigate the process.. I have practiced law for over 24 years and I am admitted to the bar in both Massachusetts and New York. In addition to family law, my background includes experience in landlord/tenant, real estate and intellectual property matters (focus on artists, museums and non-profits). In 2001, I was formally trained as a mediator.. I am on the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Council for Family Mediation, a member of the Massachusetts Collaborative Law Council, the Massachusetts Bar Association, the Massachusetts Guardianship Association, the Massachusetts Juvenile Bar Association and the New England Association for Conflict Resolution. I graduated from Whittier College School of Law (J.D.) and Boston University (B.S.).. I help my clients transition through divorce with confidence.

Firm: LJ Law Team

So, a little about me.  I know choosing an attorney is tough, and hopefully this information helps you. I founded LJ Law (formerly associated with Just Law) in 2010  because I saw a need for a different type of law firm.  One that wasn't focused on a make money at all costs mentality.  One that didn't leave scorched earth in the wake of a family law case.  We started a firm where we focus on the family and we try to be settlement-oriented, but still tough when we need to be.  Our flat fee approach ensures that the focus stays on achieving the best outcome using client's resources to their maximum potential.. I have been practicing in the area of divorce and family law for over 20 years.. Prior to starting LJ  Law (formely associated with Just Law), I worked for the Office of Guardian ad Litem representing abused and neglected children, I have continued this work by acting as a Private Guardian ad Litem in cases. My degree in Psychology and training and experience with complex assets, mediation, child development, alienation, abuse and neglect, trauma, domestic violence and personality disorders, makes me uniquely qualified to handle complex cases in a way that keeps client’s and children’s mental health at the forefront.. I'm a Criminal Defense Attorney, author, Police Academy Legal Instructor, Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Instructor, Firearms and Use of Force Instructor, and an ACS-CHAL Forensic Lawyer-Scientist, and I have been helping good people in bad situations all across Virginia for more than 30 years.  My firm handles all types of Criminal cases and I have successfully represented clients accused of everything from misdemeanor DUI / DWI offenses to serious felony criminal offenses involving drugs, guns and violent crimes.  We also help clients with civil matters such as Expungement of arrest records, Driver License Restoration, Firearm Rights Restoration, and Civll Asset Forfeiture proceedings.. In addition to building a successful law practice, I have spent many years teaching.  I am a DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Instructor, and I have taught lawyers from coast to coast.  As a police academy Legal Instructor, I taught Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Rules of Evidence and Constitutional Law to police recruits.  As a contract attorney for U.S. Law Shield, I teach Constitutional Law and Virginia state laws relating to firearms, use of force, self-defense, etc.  I also serve on the USCCA Critical Response Team, which is a benefit for USCCA members.. I am a Founding Member of the DUI Defense Lawyers Association, and a Member of the National College for DUI Defense, national organizations dedicated to raising the quality of DUI / DWI defense by educating lawyers about the many complex issues in DUI / DWI cases.  In addition, I am one of only two lawyers in Virginia to have earnied the designation of Forensic Lawyer-Scientist as recognized by the American Chemical Society Division of Chemistry and the Law for my study of forensic chromatography, discussed in more detail below.. I devote considerable time to seeking out and completing specialized education and training, and certification programs in the fields of forensic science and DUI / DWI defense, and it has helped me provide top-notch representation to my clients.  I am trained on Police RADAR/LIDAR, Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, breath alcohol testing, blood alcohol testing, medical issues which arise in DUI / DWI cases and as an Operator of several different breath testing machines, including the Intoximeter ECIR II currently used in Virginia.. My advanced education, specialized training and vast experience has enabled me to win NOT GUILTY verdicts in some extremely difficult and seemingly unwinnable DUI/DWI cases, including a case with a blood test result of 0.29 - more than 3.5 times the 0.08 legal limit.  I have come to be recognized nationwide for my expertise regarding DUI / DWI and I regularly serve as a consultant on Virginia DUI / DWI laws.  I have appeared on tv as a Legal Analyst and I have been featured in both TIME magazine and Bloomberg Businessweek as a leader in the field of DUI / DWI Defense.. I have won cases at trial in all three trial courts in Virginia:  J&DR District Courts, General District Courts and Circuit Courts.  In addition, I have won in the Virginia Court of Appeals, thereby getting a felony conviction reversed and the case being dismissed.. I have shared some of my knowledge and insight in a book on DUI / DWI in Virginia called the DUI/DWI Arrest Survival Guide: The Guilt Myth - which I co-authored with Bob Battle.  If you would like a FREE copy, all you have to do is visit my website.. Completing certification training for breath alcohol machines is absolutely mandatory, in my opinion, for any lawyer who handles DUI / DWI cases.  I have gone even further and acquired several of my own breath testing machines, including an Intoxilyzer 5000 and an ECIR, which enables me to further familiarize myself with these machines.  Similarly, after completing training on forensic chromatography, I acquired my own gas chromatograph, the machine used in the state lab to conduct gas chromatography.. I have earned the ACS-CHAL Forensic Lawyer-Scientist Designation, and as of July 2025, only one other lawyer in the entire state of Virginia has earned this Designation.  To do so, I completed course work on the following subjects:. (1) Forensic Chromatography: Theory and Practice, which addresses the theory of Gas Chromatography, as well as ethanol based analysis by Headspace Gas Chromatography with a Flame Ionization Detector (HS-GC-FID);. (2) Forensic Analysis of Solid Drugs, which addresses the instrumental analysis of solid drugs in their pre-consumption form using FTIR, Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), Colormetrics, Microscopy, Thin Layer Chromatogrphy, etc.; and. (3) Forensic Principles of DUID, which involves the pharmacology of drugs, issues of how drug use may or may not impact driving, instrumental analysis by GC-MS, Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS), etc.. All three courses were 40-hour courses which included both classroom time and hands-on time working in a lab.  I calibrated instruments, developed samples, injected samples for testing, analyzed and interpreted data, etc.  I used the instruments in the same way, using the same matrices, as an analyst would in a forensic laboratory.. I am also a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Virginia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and I have been recognized for excellence by various organizations.. I have successfully represented clients accused of all types of crime, including those listed below:. Alcohol:  DUI / DWI, Drinking While Driving, Intoxicated in Public, Underage Possession of Alcohol, Sale of Alcohol to a Minor, etc.. Drugs:  Possession, Manufacturing, Distribution, Possession With Intent to Distribute, Conspiracy to Distribute, etc.. Theft:  Grand Larceny, Petit Larceny, Embezzlement, Shoplifting / Concealment, Credit Card Theft, Failure to Return Rental Property, Theft of Services, etc.. Fraud:  Forgery, Uttering Forged Document, Obtaining Money by False Pretenses, Bad Checks, Credit Card Fraud, Construction Fraud, etc.. Violence:  Murder, Manslaughter, Aggravated Malicious Wounding, Malicious Wounding, Robbery, Assault & Battery on Law Enforcement, Domestic Assault & Battery, etc.. Guns:  Possession by a Felon, Use of Firearm During Commission of a Crime, Making False Statements During Purchase, Possession of Concealed Weapon, etc.. Sex:  Rape, Aggravated Sexual Battery, Computer Solicitation of a Minor, Indecent Liberties, Carnal Knowledge, Sexual Battery, Contributing to the Delinquency of  Minor, etc.. Property:  Common Law Burglary, Statutory Burglary, Unlawful Entry, Destruction of Property, Trespassing, Tampering with a Vehicle, etc.. Driving:  DUI / DWI, Reckless Driving, Racing, Driving Suspended or Revoked, Hit & Run, Attempting to Elude Police, etc.. As you can see, whatever it is - misdemeanor or felony, my team and I can help.. I work tirelessly to stay on the cutting edge in an attempt to provide top notch representation to my clients.  Below are some of the courses I have completed.. I have completed certification training on:. - Standardized Field Sobriety Testing - Instructor (SFST). - Standardized Field Sobriety Testing - Practitioner (SFST). - Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE). - Police Traffic RADAR/LIDAR. I have completed certification training and education programs on various breath testing machines, including:. - ECIR II (Virginia's current breath testing machine). - Intoxilyzer 8000 (the new and improved version of the Intoxilyzer 5000). - Intoxilyzer 5000 (Virginia used this for about 15 yrs before switching to the ECIR II). - Intoxilyzer 400. - Intoxilyzer S-D5. - Intoxilyzer S-D2. I have completed forensic courses on the following subjects and earned the ACS-CHAL Forensic Lawyer-Scientist Designation:. - Forensic Chromatography: Theory & Practice. - Forensic Drug Analysis. - Forensic Principles of DUID. I have completed more general education and training courses about DUI / DWI Defense than I could list, or you'd ever bother reading, but here are a few of the highlights:. - National College for DUI Defense trial skills courses held at Harvard Law School (an annual program). - Mastering Scientific Evidence in DUI / DWI Cases (an annual program). - Forensic Breath Alcohol Analysis. - Medical Defenses to DUI

I began my practice as a criminal defense attorney with the Public Defender's office for the City of Norfolk.  After nearly two years handling misdemeanors & felonies with a concentration in the Juvenile Courts, I ventured into private practice.. I worked for a solo practitioner as an Associate Attorney doing all areas of family law, continuing to serve a criminal defense attorney either as a Court Appointed Attorney for the courts or with retained clients.  Additionally, I became certified as Guardian ad litem (GAL).  A GAL is a licensed attorney with an extra certification that represents the best interests of children in a custody/visitation case.. In 2006 after having my second child, I wanted to continue with my career but have the flexibility to also be a mom.  So I opened my own practice. My staff and I get along wonderfully and I consider them family. Therefore, we work well together and represent our clients  with the utmost care and respect with your family in mind.. In my spare time I am a member of the King's Daughters Infinity Circle and raise money for the Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters.  I am also a Crossfit Level 1 trainer which allows me to coach Crossfit.  I also actively train in Crossfit.  And of course, I have my own family with 3 active children that keep me busy.. Our family is here to help yours.

I am from Cuyahoga Falls OH, I went to Falls High and then Ohio Northern University because originally I wanted to be a Doctor to help people. My dad wanted me to be a lawyer because my family from Korea was in law, and he always wanted me to follow in their footsteps. I transferred home to Kent State and graduated with my B.S. in biology/ premed. I worked as a server, bartender, and a paramedic throughout my college years. Then one day I decided maybe I should try the law. I went to the University of Akron Law School and have never looked back. I truly enjoy being an attorney and I genuinely care for my clients. In my free time, you may find me starting yet another DIY project, enjoying Portland's fantastic food, checking out a band, binging sitcoms, or getting lost in a puzzle.
