John M. Terpin obtained his Juris Doctorate from Boston College Law School in 2006 and is a member of the bar of the State of Washington. Geoffrey H. Garrett served full careers as a pilot in the United States Air Force Reserve, where he was an Instructor Aircraft Commander on the Lockheed C-141, and at United Airlines, where he achieved the rank of Boeing 747-400 captain in the international operation.  He served as the vice-chairman of the Official Creditors' Committee in the major bankruptcy of United Airlines and was named Seattle Captain of the Year in 2005.  He wrote a major study of airline code sharing for the Air Line Pilots Association.. While flying, Geoff was also engaged in the full-time practice of law.  He began his legal career in 1980 as a commercial litigator in California.  In 1988, when he moved with his family to Seattle, he converted his practice to estate planning and settlement of decedents' estates.  He has also practiced in bankruptcy, small business formation and governance, special needs planning, veteran's benefits, and elder law.  His practice is now limited to estate planning, probate, and trust administration.. Mr. Garrett is also a financial advisor and coach.. Geoff and Sabina have been married since college in 1970.  They have three adult children, including a daughter with special needs, for whom Geoff serves as guardian.  He enjoys golf, bicycling, reading and political cartooning.

As a woman and as a member of the LGBT community, I believe all people should be treated fairly and equally regardless of minority status, and understand the unique issues facing members of the LGBT community.  I have a passion for Juvenile Law and over five years experience in both delinquency and dependency proceedings.. In 2012 I worked for the Washington United for Marriage campaign, successfully defending Washington State’s Marriage Equality law at the ballot box.  While I am excited about winning this crucial civil right, I recognize we still have work to do to achieve equality.. I presented at the Oregon Criminal Defense Lawyers Association’s annual Juvenile Law seminar in 2009 and 2011 and my run for the Oregon State Senate was fueled by my dissatisfaction with the juvenile and criminal justice systems.. I began my legal practice, after working for many years as a Human Resource Manager for a variety of businesses including a large local heavy manufacturer and in Risk Management.   Today, I help clients with planning for an responding to life experiences (e.g., elder law issues, estate planning, guardianships, probates, and small business issues).    I taught as on the faculty at City University and periodically wrote columns on employment issues for the Vancouver Business Journal.  In addition, have conducted seminars and workshops in the community related to elder law, estate planning, and employment law.. I am committed to serving in the community, founding  the Human Dignity Foundation, which runs a non-profit adult care home (Good Shepherd Manor) to provide a better place for elderly, disabled and/or terminally ill adults with limited financial means.  I am an active member of St. Thomas Aquinas parish where am a reader, a sacristan and  have served on the Pastoral Council and the Outreach Commission, I currently serve on the Board of the Children's Center and previously served on the Board for Second Step Housing.. My husband, Tom, and I have have two Beagles, Hastings and Pepper, who I enjoy loving and showing.  We have a menagerie of mostly reptiles (two leopard  geckos, a crested gecko and a bearded dragon, two tree frogs, a russian gold tortoise) and one small pet mouse.  Togehter we enjoy camping and I enjoy hiking (I got to walk the Camino de Santago a few years ago - an amazing experience).

I have the best job in the world.  Every day, I meet with wonderful people who love their families, and want to protect their loved ones, keep them out of court, save money, and make things easier for them in the future.  Our estate plans enable our clients to help avoid unnecessary placement in nursing homes.  This alone can save up to $7500 every month, while allowing the clients to preserve their privacy, dignity and quality of life by remaining in their own homes as long as possible.  In the unlikely event that nursing home care IS required, our estate plans contain the tools necessary to do Medicaid Planning.  Typically, this allows the client to qualify for medicaid much more quickly, without having to SPEND DOWN everything they have been working for their entire lives.  All we do at Rice & Rice is estate planning, and we have been practicing law for almost 42 years..
