I am a third generation lawyer. Both my grandfather and father practiced law in Johnstown PA, where I grew up.. Both sides of my family settled in southwestern PA over 150 years ago, so my roots run deep. My grandparents lived within walking distance, and genealogy was a family pastime. I grew up hearing stories: about an ancestor who was kidnapped by a distant tribe, later escaped and made her way back home to what was then the “western frontier”; about later settlers from Wales and Germany who fell in love with the area because it reminded them of home; about cousins who ran for the hills with their children to escape the Johnstown flood of 1889. These stories gave me a strong sense of belonging – of knowing where I came from and how I fit into the world.. Everyone has their own stories. Many estate planning attorneys talk of leaving a “legacy,” but often they are referring only to assets. As I see it, estate planning can and should be so much more than just deciding who gets what after a death. In my practice, we help clients get to the heart of what really matters to them. Working closely together, we analyze various planning opportunities to find the one that best achieves their unique needs and visions. As a member of WealthCounsel, I have access to the knowledge and know-how of some of the most qualified estate planning attorneys in the country who keep me current on the most effective tax and legal planning strategies.. For clients who wish to leave a legacy of more than assets, we provide creative opportunities through video, written memoirs, ethical wills, and the continuation of family rituals to pass down their values and their stories for generations to come.. I love what I do. I like to think that my practice combines the best of “small town” law with “big city” resources. The most important part of my practice is getting to know my clients and their families, sustaining those relationships over time and being there for them when it counts.

I practice exclusively in the area of estates and trusts and am first and foremost committed to treating my clients as I would want my most beloved family members to be treated by a trustworthy advisor. My approach to planning is wholistic, which allows individuals and families to forge and articulate their complete human legacy as opposed to merely their financial legacy. I take the time to get to know my clients deeply, so that I can more effectively help them translate their values into financial and intangible gifts that will be passed down to loved ones and to cherished causes. I also help people remember that the quality of their relationships is the primordial "asset" in a successful navigation of life's transitions, including the birth of children, new family configurations, and the unforeseen challenges that visit many lives. Assets accumulated over a lifetime can too easily be dissipated in senseless family disputes, where the interpersonal bonds have not been strengthened throughout a lifetime, nor wishes clearly communicated.Truly acknowledging that we are more than the dollars we have accumulated, that the world needs our generosity for its re-creation, and that the quality of our relationships is vital to a harmonious trajectory through this life, are just some of the great benefits of approaching estate planning in a wholistic manner. It is always a deep honor to assist my clients in this important process.

I began my career working for large law firms, moving paper, billing large sums over a lot of hours, moving money from one rich entity to another, dealing with politics, bureaucracy, and unhappy clients. Obviously, all of this made me extremely unhappy. This was not what I imagined when I went to law school. I just wanted to help people and make a difference in their lives.. One day, a friend of my mother asked me to update her living trust. The trust was almost 15 years old and there wasn't much to it. It didn't reflect the current law and it didn't reflect her current life needs. Further, she told me that her attorney never even explained to her what was in the trust. So she was learning everything from me 15 years after the fact! Worst of all, none of her assets were even titled in the name of the trust. This meant that all the time, trouble, and money she spent was a waste, since her family would still have to deal with probate after her death.. Because of my own problems in setting up an estate plan, and because I wanted to help my mom's friend (and others like her, I decided to start my own firm).. I figured I could make my law firm much better than most by just doing the opposite of what my mom's friend's lawyer did. This is how she described her encounter 15 years ago and how the process went: 1) She provided some limited information to the attorney; 2) The attorney did not ask many questions; 3) The attorney hastily prepared some documents; and 4) She signed the documents, put them away, and never looked at them again.. It's not a stretch to know that this isn't the kind of relationship that most people want. Thus, I sought to bring back the long-term, trusted relationship between attorneys and clients. So I came up with a new process and model.. The Zapf Estate Planners Model. Almost everything we do is based on a flat fee. No one likes to get billed for a quick email or phone call to an attorney. And I definitely do not like to send those bills and keep track of my time in six-minute increments. So I did away with that old, tired way of doing law. Feel free to contact me as you wish.. We want your trust to work for you. Too often people fail to change the ownership of their assets into the name of the trust. Too often attorneys fail to help their clients with this difficult process. No longer. It is our responsibility to supervise you funding your trust.. No longer will estate planning be a one-time transaction. When you hire us, that is when our relationship begins…for life. We offer free reviews of your plan every three years at no additional charge. We also offer a membership program (that nearly all of our clients participate in), which includes a yearly plan review and unlimited changes to your , please understand that estate planning isn’t really about you. After all, you will be gone when your plan takes effect. It’s about creating a plan of action that’s going to take care of those you love most.
