My practice concentrations are primarily in criminal defense, personal injury, family law matters, defending employers in workers' compensation claims and civil trial practice.. I am originally from Bucyrus, Ohio, and graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and earned my Juris Doctor from New England Law Boston in Boston, Massachusetts.

I take great pride in being a criminal defense attorney. I feel honored to defend my clients and I respect the trust each one places in me. I have very strong trial skills and an empathetic concern for each client.  I work hard to help achieve the best possible outcome for each client.  In order to more effectively defend my clients, I have limited my practice to criminal and DUI defense.  I have successfully defended clients charged with capital murder, aggravated murder, murder, rape, robbery, kidnapping, drug offenses, domestic violence and child abuse. I am also experienced in, and have successfully defended, cases involving allegations of “shaken baby” as well as multiple bone fractures. My practice also encompasses DUI defense and the related charges of aggravated vehicular homicide and vehicular assault.. Throughout my practice I have developed a strong understanding of the forensic sciences and issues commonly confronted in criminal cases:  forensic pathology, toxicology, tire impressions, speed calculations, finger prints, psychological and psychiatric illnesses.  I strive to understand the science and methodology associated with the many different types of experts I encounter, particularly DNA evidence.  I frequently consult on DNA issues in cases, and have presented several lectures in an effort to help other attorneys understand and defend against DNA evidence. I have also achieved a strong working understanding of the medical science and issues related to shaken baby cases as well as multiple fracture cases.  I am also certified in DWI detection and the administration of NHTSA standardized field sobriety testing.. I am a past president of the Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (2009) and a continuing board member of OACDL. I am a long-standing member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Fairfield County Bar Association and I have been a member of the National Trial Lawyers Top 100 continuously since 2013. I am also proud to be a graduate of NACDL’s National Criminal Defense College.

I began defending individuals charged with crimes in November of 1993.  I have always enjoyed the challenge of representing people in very difficult circumstances.  I find the experience of seeking justice rewarding.

Max graduated from the University of Akron School of Law, with honors, and received his Bachelor of Arts degrees in History and Political Science from Ashland University where he was a 3-time academic All-American in both soccer and track.. Max now competes in the courtroom where he represents those charged with misdemeanors and felonies in both state and federal court in Ohio and West Virginia.

My volunteer work as a Court Appointed Special Advocate and Guardian Ad Litem (CASA/GAL) has also given me access to special training and additional experience in juvenile law—to both the law of this practice area and the realities that parents, foster parents, and other family members and friends face when they find themselves in the juvenile court system or in their county’s department of children services (including Summit County Children’s Services, which is also called SCCS or CSB, and Portage Children’s Services Agency, or PCSA or CSB).. I stay involved and in touch with the state of the law in Ohio in my practice areas through the Continuing Legal Education seminars and the networking opportunities available through the Ohio Bar Association. I attend many Continuing Legal Education seminars annually to expand my professional knowledge and network of knowledgeable practitioners; I am recognized as a member of the Ohio Bar College for attending more than 24 hours of CLE in a single year, which is double what the Ohio Supreme Court requires of registered attorneys (the Court requires 24 hours every TWO years)!. My other professional memberships include the Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys, which puts me in touch with criminal defense practitioners in my area and around the state who are deep in the trenches every day alongside me. My membership in the Ohio Women's Bar Association and the American Bar Association also enrich my professional network and knowledge of relevant case law.
