I am focusing my practice in NORTHERN AZ - Sedona, Prescott, Cottonwood, Camp Verde, Flagstaff, Holbrook, Lake Havasu, Parker -- all counties-- Yavapai, Coconino, Mohave, LaPaz and Apache counties in justice, municipal, city or superior courts. I am a native Arizonan.  I was born in the Valley and raised in Prescott, where I attended high school.. I attend Arizona State University and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business Marketing in 2000.  After a successful career exercising my creative talents as an entrereneur and computer artist, I decided to attend the Phoenix School of Law in 2008.. During my law school education, I served on the Executive Board for Phoenix Law Review's Fourth Volume as a Managing Editor.  I also participated in the Veteran's Legal Assistance Clinic, drafting wills and solving landlord/tenant issues for qualified Maricopa County veterans.  I further went on to serve veterans through my volunteer work at the Bob Stump Veterans Administration Medical Center.  After graduation from law school, I worked briefly in the field of bankruptcy law.. In March of 2013, I joined a large firm in downtown Phoenix where I practiced criminal defense exclusively for over 3 and a half years.  During those years, I represented hundreds of clients in various Arizona courts.  In October of 2016, I left that firm and founded Hassen Law Group, PLLC with the mission to provide those charged with crimes a compassionate and dedicated representation.   I firmly believe that everyone charged with a crime deserves quality representation, a zealous defense, and respect.

prosecuting numerous Felony DUI cases as well as Aggravated Assault
with a Deadly Weapon, Manslaughter and Murder.. In February, 2008, Mr. Martinez decided to leave the Maricopa

I have been practicing criminal defense law in Arizona for approximately 40 years. From 1985 until August, 2012, I was a certified criminal law specialist.  It was my choice not to re-apply for certification, for a variety of reasons, not the least of which was that after all these years, if I don't know what I'm doing, being "certified" isn't going to change that.. My practice is almost exclusively in state superior courts and some lower level courts (city, justice of the peace).  It also consists of considerable experience in appeals and post-conviction relief (called "Rule 32s" in Arizona).. After practicing in my home state of New York for several years, my husband and I returned to Arizona, where we'd both attended law school (in Tucson).  Initially, I clerked for the now deceased Justice Jack D.H. Hays of the Arizona Supreme Court.  That was followed by a stint as a staff attorney for that court, under the tutelage of the Hon. Sarah Grant, then the Chief Staff Attorney and now a retired Court of Appeals judge.  These experiences made me a better trial lawyer and a much better appellate lawyer.. When I went into private practice, I worked for John J. Flynn, one of the attorneys responsible for the Miranda v. Arizona decision. Unfortunately, I did not work for John for long when he had a massive heart attack and died.  I finished up some of the work he'd left, then went to work for another distinguished criminal defense attorney in Phoenix, Thomas A. Thinnes (deceased).  After approximately eight years with Tom, I went out on my own.  However, I learned a great deal from Tom, who was a good friend and superior mentor.. I have had many mentors among some of the senior attorneys here in Arizona (although I am one myself now).  Among the many were Craig Mehrens, Jordan Green, Tom Karas (deceased)  and Phil Goldstein (deceased).  All of them taught me a great deal about being a good and honest lawyer.. Tom Dean has been using his law practice to advocate for nationwide cannabis policy reform for over 20 years. After honing his courtroom litigation skills for several years in Ohio and Arizona, Tom accepted the position of Legal Director for the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) and relocated to the organization’s headquarters in Washington, DC. As NORML’s Legal Director, Tom initiated and managed many matters of national importance to cannabis policy reform. He also coordinated the efforts of the NORML Legal Committee and NORML Amicus Committee in key cases throughout the U.S. He continues to serve as a lifetime member of the NORML Legal Committee, Chairman of the NORML Amicus Committee, and Legal Director of NORML’s Arizona state chapter. I started my career as a Maricopa County Deputy Public Defender over two decades ago.  I have always only been a criminal defense trial lawyer up until the beginning of 2021.  In January I joined the City of Phoenix Public Defender's Office as their new Assistant Director.. My devotion to the practice of criminal law has been driven by my belief that there is good in everyone.  I try to spend time looking at my client holistically and seeing past the immediate charges to try to get the bigger picture as to what is driving them to wind up afoul of our criminal justice system.. I am a southern Arizona native and grew up on my dad's cattle ranch east of Nogales on the Arizona-Mexico border.  After I finished college at the University of Arizona, I taught high school social studies in Tucson. After teaching for a few years, I decided to go to law school to focus on advocating for immigrant rights. Growing up on the border gave me unique insight on how immigration policy affects families and sparked the passion I need to fight for immigrants in court.  I primarily focus on immigration removal defense cases and family-based immigration petitions.
