Upon graduating from law school in 1979, I worked as a staff attorney for the Rhode Island Supreme Court.  From 1981-1987, I was a prosecutor in the Fairfax County Commonwealth Attorney's Office.  I have been a criminal defense lawyer since 1987.. Joseph W. McMurray has been a licensed attorney since 2010, currently serving clients in Tennessee and Virginia. Mr. McMurray was born and raised in Scott County, Virginia. He attended James Madison University and received a scholarship to attend Charleston School of Law. After graduating law school, he clerked for Charleston County Judge Honorable Irv Condon. Following his clerkship, Mr. McMurray began private practice which eventually lead him to accepting a position as an Assistant District Attorney General in the Second Judicial District in Sullivan County, Tennessee. While serving in that role he was the supervisor of General Sessions Court, Juvenile Court and Domestic Relations for the Second Judicial District for over six years. He gained valuable knowledge and connections as a prosecutor which have garnered him tremendous success, both at bench trials and jury trials.. In January 2018, Mr. McMurray left the District Attorney General’s Office and accepted a position as an associate attorney with Mr. R. Wayne Culbertson’s office. Renee Berard has lived in Loudoun County, Virginia for over 30 years and is a proud alumna of Loudoun Valley High School.  Renee went on to graduate magna cum laude from Virginia Tech in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.  After college, Renee graduated cum laude from Tulane University Law School in 2009.. While attending law school, Renee was awarded an internship with the United States District Court for the Western District of North Carolina in Charlotte, North Carolina.  She had the honor and pleasure of working for Chief Judge Graham C. Mullen.  During this experience, Renee was able to participate in trials, sentencing and naturalization ceremonies.  She also gained experience researching and drafting orders that were before the court.. Why I Became a Defense Attorney. Three reasons:  To help people in trouble; to protect individual rights; and to defend the Constitution.. I grew up watching my mother help people when they most needed it and I know it made a deep impression on me.  I learned so much from watching her.  Most importantly, she taught me to “meet people where they are” and see what you could offer of yourself to help them.  She was the best counselor and mediator you’d ever meet and I strive in my own career to be half as good as she was in her career.  She is gone now but I know that I carry her spirit with me whenever I am actively engaged in helping someone in crisis.. I also grew up as a Navy junior and that, too, made a deep impression on me.  My father was a distinguished Naval Officer who flew jets during the Vietnam War.  He risked his life to defend our way of life and the Constitution.  He knew that if there weren’t citizens who were willing to stand up and fight on behalf of all of us we could lose everything.  I am proud to say that I have followed in my father’s footsteps in defending our rights and the Constitution; I have just done it in a different way.. Very early on in my career, I saw how easily all of our rights can be eroded if there aren’t lawyers out there fighting to protect the rights of all who are accused – the guilty and the innocent.  If we don’t demand that the promises of the Constitution are delivered, we lose them.  The burden to prove guilt is on the government not on the defendant.  The Constitution demands that we view people accused of crime as innocent unless and until they are proven guilty.  And guilt must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.  These are amazing concepts that separate our country and our laws from the rest of the world.  We lose them if we don’t fight for them.. At the core, these are the reasons that I chose to become a defense attorney.

Mr. Greene earned his J.D. Degree from the Catholic University of America in 1994. He then worked as a judicial clerk for the Honorable John A. Terry of the D.C. Court of Appeals for a one year term. Mr. Greene believed that in starting his own practice, he could be more effective in helping people deal with a variety of legal issues.
