The picture above is me as a Captain of a Guide Boat at The Swim Across The Sound a race 15.5 mile across Long Island Sound.  I am now preparing for my 13th race as a captain. As in "The Swim" steering a straight course in a Divorce or other Family Case sometimes means taking some turns as the currents change.. As an experienced attorney I have been involved with many people going through difficult times.  While experienced as a trial attorney, I try to use my trial prep to negotiate with the other party.  Except in the most egregious of cases it is better for families to determine their own path than to have the court do it.

Since 2004 I have had the privilege to assist some extraordinary people in their personal and family matters related to marriage, divorce, children, parents, family wealth and immigration.. During my time in law schools, I worked on projects funded by the Ford Foundation to promote women's rights, social equality, constitutional democracy and rule of law in transitional societies in Asia and Eastern Europe. After working for some renowned international law firms in New York, Beijing, and Hong Kong, I established my own practice in New York City in 2004 and in 2016 I expanded my practice to Michigan, where my family now resides. For over a decade, I have represented clients from over 50 countries. I have litigated and tried high-impact international family law cases in federal and state courts in New York. I am frequently hired by U.S. and foreign law firms to consult or serve as expert in matters involving multinational litigation. I am a recognized expert in international family law, U.S. immigration law and Chinese family law. I have testified as an expert of international law, U.S. law, and Chinese law in various foreign country courts and U.S. courts.. My husband, Dr. Stave Kohtz and I are proud parents of three talented daughters. Our family cares about climate crisis, public education, gun violence, health care justice in rural America and many other social causes. At our free time, we enjoy postmodern and contemporary artwork, cooking, playing musical instruments, sailing and traveling around the world.

John's practice is limited to criminal defense.  He has handled a wide range of cases from kidnapping and rape to DUIs and other traffic offenses.  His wife Elizabeth is also an attorney.  They have three wonderful daughters and an energetic son.. In his off time, John enjoys traveling with his family (frequently to Disney World), scuba diving, and BBQing.  John's smoked ribs have been called the best on the planet by many.

Westchester County family lawyer Joan Iacono has always been a hands-on kind of person. She finds a way to accomplish what she needs to accomplish, whether in a court of law or in her private life.. Joan Iacono was born and raised in Westchester County, where she has been a lawyer for 21 years. But, the majority of her experience is in private practice in New York City and Bronx County. From 1988 to 1992 she served as Principal Court Attorney to the Chief Judge of the Bronx Family Court. There she helped draft court opinions, assisted in trial management and courthouse management, and conferenced cases with litigants and lawyers to effect settlement. The experience was valuable for Iacono's private practice, as it gave her a substantial insight into the judicial side of family law and the decision-making process in New York Family Court. Andi truly believes that the best way to end a marriage, or resolve a dispute between people who have been in a relationship, is by reaching an agreement so that an already strained relationship does not become damaged further by the intensity of the litigation process. But not every case settles. That is why Andi engages in thorough preparation: so that if a case must be tried, it is tried well.  Working hard to settle a case while being thoroughly prepared to try the case in court is the pinnacle of effective lawyering to which Andi strives with the help of her able paralegals and assistants.. Andi has a penchant for the tough custody cases,  and has tried many in her 19 year career. She also enjoys the rigor of a good property case that focuses on valuing business entities, tracing separate property and/or interpreting premarital agreements.  She enjoys helping people during this turbulent time by offering them information, guidance and compassion as they make important decisions about their futures.. Andi’s dad is a doctor and her mom is a nurse, so they clearly care about people (and are averse to lawyers.) Andi found her way to law school through her shared desire to help people. She wanted to work with people, not for corporations (and definitely not in medical malpractice.) Family law was a natural fit that allowed her to spend her day with individual people as clients.. Andi hales from northwest Indiana (the Region). She attended Munster High School (National Speech Champion in 1990), Miami University in Ohio for her bachelor’s degree and Valparaiso University School of Law. She did not return to the mid-west after coming to Texas for her law school internship in Austin in 1998 and found that she was not a lonely transplant. Midwesterners are everywhere, y’all.. She was effective in transplanting her husband, Christopher, from Indiana in 2003. She later persuaded her parents to relocate to Texas by having two children. They all happily reside in Lockhart, Texas, just 30 miles south on 183 where the barbeque roams. Her children share in her passion for physical activity and performing arts; so there are a lot of dance, singing and theatre classes being coordinated on the official family calendar.
