Dear Potential Client,. I've built my practice around taking care of peoples legal problems since 1990 as a prosecutor and then as a criminial defense attorney as well as a general civil attorney since 2002. My clients find me easy to reach and I promptly return phone calls or email messages usually the same day or sometimes the day after.. I believe in keeping clients informed about their cases and believe that it is important that clients understand the process as much as the results so they can make informed decisions. I return calls promptly and have regular communication with my clients. On student cases, parents usually have more questions than the client which I am happy to answer. I also help students with collateral issues with the Ohio University's Office of Community Standards and Student Responsibility issues (formerly known as OU Judiciaries).. My clients have the benefit of my experience as a former city prosecutor as I have seen well over 20,000 cases over the last 20 years. I've also been a felony prosecutor handling serious crimes such as murder, robbery, rape, breaking and entering, drug trafficking, domestic violence, and felonious assault. I've also been a prosecutor in juvenile court as well.. As a result I have seen a multitude of cases, defenses and assertions over that time. So I know what works and what does not in relation to preparing defenses, juries and bench trials over a wide spectrum of cases. Because of that experience I also represent a growing number of clients including OVI/DUI clients as well others for Underage Consumption, Possession of Drugs and speeding cases including truckers with CDLs.. I've attended trainings by the Ohio State Highway Patrol on various topics including speed, accident reconstruction, and drug interdiction, and been certified by the Ohio Peace Officer's Training Academy for purposes of presenting instruction. I've presented instruction to officers, deputies and cadets on search and seizure, drug laws, use of force, and updates in the law.. I've given many presentations over the years due to my experience in the area of criminal law including search and seizure, domestic violence, protection orders, obsenity law, OVI/DUI, Fourth Amendment Law, and recent trends in the law. I was a co-founder of the city prosecutor's section for the Ohio Municipal Attorney's Association. I've been a lecturer at our local bar association annual winter seminars. I also have taught a paralegal course since 1998.. I previously had experience reprenting clients on behalf of insurance companies in personal injury suits. So I have 10+ years experience in personal injury cases in seeing how insurance companies evaluate such cases, assess them, and negotiate. I now represent Plaintiff victims in such cases and am able to put that experience to use for those who are hurt in accidents to successfully negotiate their cases and protect them in court. I've also had an extensive amount of experience in reviewing, analyzing and presenting evidence in traffic cases based upon my experience as a city prosecutor, insurance defense attorney and personal injury attorney.. I have over 10+ years experience in Divorces/Dissolutions/Child Custody Matters (Domestic Relations Court). I only take so many of these types a cases a year so that I'm sure that I can devote enough time to them as they are among the most time consuming and emotionial cases to have.. I've argued cases before the Ohio Supreme Court and Ohio Appellate Court. I also appeared in the United States Supreme Court. My Approach to the Practice of Law. In the simplest terms, an attorney is a problem solver. Specifically, a client comes to the attorney with a problem and seeks the attorney’s assistance in fashioning an outcome that will, from the client’s perspective, solve the problem.. Generally, an attorney’s assistance is required for one of two mains reasons. First, the problem might require a solution that is too complex for a client to solve without the professional and/or legal experience of the attorney.. The second, and far more common reason to seek the assistance of an attorney, is that often times there is an opposing party with the same problems as the client, but with a vastly different idea of what an appropriate outcome should be. When this occurs, I must then persuade the opposing party or a judge that the outcome my client seeks is the most just. This requires a good sense of pragmatism, as well as legal knowledge and ability.. While many people say that they want an attorney that is tough or aggressive, and that will fight for them, they often do not think about what that means. To me, being tough means finding out what my clients wants and not settling for less.. This does not necessarily involve attacking or destroying the opposite party which can have long-term consequences. Often times, such an approach merely results in the parties hating each other, and lawyers making a lot of money. If I can get what my clients want by being nice, then I will be nice. If I must take a case to trial, I will be prepared and put on the best case possible even if it involves presenting facts that the opposite party finds offensive so long as they are relevant and have a bearing on the case.. I never lose sight of the fact that in custody cases, the parties will still be dealing with each other, and their children will still love BOTH of their parents, long after the case has been completed.
I have a passion for helping families through difficult times. Prior to my legal career, I worked with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. I was able to gain the compassion and knowledge to help families navigate through a complex system in times of need. Now, I guide clients through a different, yet still complex system - family court.. While working for MDHHS, I was stationed in an elementary school. The families there became “my families” and I took great pride in the simple task of greeting the students at the door every morning with a big smile and a high-five. I believe it is imperative that every child and family I work with knows their worth.. I am born and raised in the Grand Rapids area. As an only child I developed an ability to keep myself entertained. I’d put on theater, music, and dance shows in my backyard where neighbors came to enjoy the show; at least until the batteries in my beloved “boombox” would lose their charge. My love for theater and public speaking has served me well as an attorney as I advocate for my clients in court.. After completing my undergraduate degree in one of my two loves, music, I went on to attend WMU Thomas M. Cooley Law School and graduated magna cum laude to practice my second love, law. My first goal was to find a place where I could work with colleagues who would share my love for parents and children in need and where the team would value a superior knowledge of Michigan law. I found that right away with the Kraayeveld Law team. Here, the attorneys work as a team to passionately represent clients at all stages of divorce and custody litigation.. In my free time, I enjoy spending family time with my husband and our two daughters, and my English Bulldog – Sir Howard the Magnifico – affectionately known as “Howie.”
