Apartment asking for HUD certification

landlord tenant attorney Texas Jul 28, 2026
My apartment complex is in Location: DFW Texas, USA, and owned by a big property management company. We’ve lived here for about 5 years. Two years into our stay here, they started asking for proof of income when they renewed our lease, and said it was because they were eligible for some HUD grant, and that we had to show proof of income to keep the amount of rent we were paying. Our rent isn’t crazy expensive, but it isn’t crazy cheap either. We pay a normal DFW price for our apartment. So, I thought it was weird, but whatever. We make more than enough money for the rent, so whatever. We are saving to buy a small house someday, but that’s a while off. This year, when they asked us to renew, they not only asked for income, but asked us for the amount of our assets. So like, stock we own, and the amount of savings we have. I’m not super comfortable with sharing with my apartment complex my stock options lol. But then I saw a hud website on the top of this form (hud site) and my question is this…. 1) do we think my apartment complex is applying for section 8 housing on my behalf? And 2) is this actually legal? I’ve never had an apartment complex ask so many questions to renew, and it’s really strange. I just want to know if maybe I should reach out to a lawyer, or if there’s someone I need to rat them out to?
