Getting out of a lease in an intimate partner violence situation
landlord tenant attorney Ohio Jul 31, 2026
Location: Columbus, Ohio My friend just escaped an abusive relationship in which he was 100% about to kill her. Of course, in these situations you really need to fully cut off all contact asap. Problem is, she just renewed their lease in May. She’s not comfortable with leaving him to take care of it on his own. But, if she continues to do her part she has to stay in contact until next May. Is there any way to get out of this given the reality of the situation? If we were to write a letter to the landlord explaining the situation, do you think it would do anything? Would it be a matter of opinion or is there any legal basis we can rely on here? Thanks
