Collecting child support internationally (Quebec, Canada + Washington State, USA)

child support attorney Washington Aug 3, 2026
Location: Canada I live in Quebec, Canada, and my child’s father lives in Washington State. He is listed on the birth certificate and paternity is established, but we currently don’t have a formal child support order in place. I’ve been trying to understand the process, but I was told by legal aid that because Quebec and Washington don’t have a direct agreement for enforcing child support, I will have to start legal proceedings in both places, which means paying for a lawyer here and another lawyer there. Is there another process I should look into before hiring lawyers in two jurisdictions? I’m trying to understand my options and avoid unnecessary legal costs if there’s a simpler route. Any advice would be appreciated.
