Karey L. James received her bachelorette degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder in Sociology and Women’s Studies; during her undergraduate program Karey served as the chair of the board for the Women’s Resource Center, she served on the Judicial Review Board, was the president of the Sociological Honors Society, Alpha Kappa Delta and was on the board for the legal fraternity, Phi Alpha Delta.. Karey obtained her law degree from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. While in law school Karey served on the board of the Legal Association of Women, she was a Senator in the Student Bar Association, and competed in Moot Court Competitions.  During law school Karey volunteered at Colorado Legal Services a state run pro bono organization that serves low income clients and on the legal research team for the Democratic National Convention.. Karey has worked as an appellate law clerk for the Adams County District Attorney’s Office; where she wrote appeals to the District Court, Colorado Court of Appeals and drafted motions for certiorari to the Colorado Supreme Court.  Karey was a judicial intern in Denver District Court researching, writing and assisting in trials for Judge McGahey. Most recently Karey served as a law clerk in Arapahoe County District Court for Judge’s Carlos Samour and John Wheeler. In this capacity Karey researched and wrote draft opinions for both criminal and civil motions before the court, as well as draft orders on appeals from county court and municipal court. Karey served as a bailiff for both court and jury trials.. Karey worked in a small firm, handling primarily family law and bankruptcy cases. Karey and her husband run a small business in Property Management. Karey is currently a solo practitioner handling landlord tenant law, debt settlement,  family law, bankruptcy.. Karey is currently serving her third term on the board of directors for the Colorado Women’s Bar Association. I came to Colorado from western New York in 1971 (after a stint as a U.S. Merchant Marine). I came for a two week vacation and never went back. The mountains and the climate were more attractive than I could imagine and I realized I wanted to stay here. What I found most attractive, though, were the people.  Their friendly and outgoing ways took me by surprise and I fell in love with them.  I worked in a variety of jobs while completing my degree at CU Denver: construction, school bus driver, mental health worker, waiter and bartender. It was in this last incarnation that I met my wife of 33 years.  I completed my law degree in 1982 and worked for a small firm until going out on my own in 1984.  In the process my family grew with four wonderful children. We moved to the Evergreen/Conifer area in 1991 and have been here ever since.  My practice is somewhat eclectic. I provide services in the areas of debt relief, real estate transactions, wills and probate and tax resolution. I get the most satisfaction out of helping my clients. Whether it's relieving the stress of paralyzing debt, completing a complicated real estate transaction or guiding a bereaved family through the death of a loved one, there is always the feeling of satisfaction knowing I have helped a fellow human being through a tough time.  I have offices in Evergreen and Lakewood, but I often meet people at their home or other convenient place when they can't get here.
