Location: Georgia I'm a (38F), and my husband (33M) and I have been married for 10+ years. We have two children together. After many conversations, we've both agreed that our marriage has run its course. There's no fighting, no desire to punish each other, and we're both committed to co-parenting and doing what's best for our kids. At this point, we're more like friends than spouses. We live separate lives under the same roof, and we both agree that divorce is the right next step. This is not about filing for adultery or creating conflict—we simply want to move forward with our lives while continuing to raise our children together in the same town. For the past seven years, I've been a stay-at-home mom, homeschooling our children while working part-time. I also receive disability benefits, which is why I can't work full-time. He has a successful career. We already agree that the children will primarily live with me, though he hasn't fully realized that he will have to pay child support. Location: Atlanta, Georgia I got a letter yesterday from Reclaim org saying there's an unclaimed life insurance payout from a policy my ex-husband had when we were married. About $5,500. I've called the state directly and am in process of filing already. The problem is, I have no idea if he ever updated the beneficiary after we divorced 6 years ago. I don't have any policy documents and my ex and I aren't on speaking terms. I don't want to claim something that isn't mine, but if he never updated it, I'm not sure whether it would still legally be mine. Under Georgia law, does a former spouse remain a valid beneficiary on a life insurance policy after divorce if the beneficiary designation was never updated? Also, does it matter whether the policy was private versus employer-sponsored, and if so, how can I figure out which type this was without access to policy documents?
