Kate’s behind the scenes experience has been invaluable in providing her with insight on nursing home and other civil litigation cases that most lawyers do not have. She worked as a staff attorney for Fulton County Superior Court Judge Jack Goger. This enabled her to learn the Court’s perspective regarding hundreds of different cases, including nursing home abuse, car accidents, medical malpractice, trucking accidents any many more, from the initial discovery stages through jury trial. She was also formally trained as a mediator while working for the Court.. After Kate completed her clerkship with Judge Goger, she worked for one of Atlanta’s top civil litigation defense firms, Carlock, Copeland & Stair, where she was made partner after building a successful nursing home practice. While at Carlock, Kate worked for many major insurance companies defending cases focusing on nursing home abuse, medical malpractice, and motor vehicle accidents. Learning about the nursing home industry from the inside out has made Kate an asset to any nursing home case. Also knowing how the big insurance companies operate behind the scenes ensures Kate can evaluate a case the same way the insurance company does and know what they are thinking, what they are doing and why they are doing it.. Kate handles cases anywhere from the pre-suit phase, trial and the appellate level. Not all lawyers are able to handle appeals on the cases they litigate, but Kate argues her own appeals. She has even been fortunate enough to successfully argue before the Georgia Supreme Court.. Kate grew up in Lilburn, Georgia and attended Parkview High School. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia where she underwent a full time internship at the Athens-Clarke County Solicitor General’s office. Kate earned her law degree from Emory University School of Law in Atlanta, Georgia where she was a member of the Moot Court Society and the Moot Court Review Board.. Kate has two wonderful sons, Jack and Connor. In her free time, she loves trying to learn new things such as golf and mountain biking. She is currently teaching herself to cook. Kate was an avid runner as a child and recently got back to running and completed her first half marathon in 2012. Kate loves to travel and experience other cultures. Practice Areas: Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect
Gretchen focuses her law practice on representing individuals who have been injured in nursing homes and assisted living facilities due to negligence, abuse and medical malpractice. She also represents individuals who have been seriously injured in car and trucking accidents, and individuals who have been seriously injured by medical malpractice.. Prior to co-founding Wagner Hughes, LLC, Gretchen was a partner at a well-respected mid-sized law firm in Atlanta where she defended medical malpractice, trucking accident, and premises liability cases involving personal injury for over eleven years. Her invaluable experience defending medical providers, national retailers, hospitals, and working with large insurance companies allows her to represent injured clients with first-hand knowledge about how the other side evaluates, works-up and litigates complex cases involving personal injury.. Gretchen’s extensive background litigating medical cases is particularly invaluable to her representation of clients in medical negligence and nursing home abuse and neglect cases, where the medical issues and legal requirements can be complex, and where oftentimes the nursing home and medical records are voluminous and difficult for attorneys without medical background to navigate and understand. This enables her to more effectively evaluate and litigate medical cases in pursuit of her client’s goals.. Gretchen graduated cum laude, with a B.B.A. in International Business, from the University of Georgia Terry College of Business in 1998. She continued her education at the University of Georgia School of Law, where she earned a J.D. with honors in 2002. She has been consecutively named by Georgia Super Lawyers as a “Rising Star” for the past four years, and was named to the Georgia Trend Legal Elite in 2009. She has been an active member of the Georgia Association for Women Lawyers, and served on the Foundation Board of the Georgia Association for Women Lawyers from 2008 to 2011. Gretchen has lectured for the National Association of Women Business Owners, and enjoys lecturing on family law and personal injury topics.
