Rory P. Pheiffer is an associate in the firm’s Business Department and a member of the intellectual property practice group. He focuses his practice primarily on the prosecution of domestic and international patents in a variety of fields including medical instruments and devices, biotechnology, microfluidic applications, and various devices in the electrical and mechanical arts. A sampling of some of the medical technologies that Rory has worked with include devices and methods for tissue and ligament attachment, tissue engineering, blood sampling devices, electrochemical cells, respiratory apparatuses, surgical instruments, endoscopic devices, gastric bands and bypass procedures, cell sorting apparatuses, stents, scaffolds, drug delivery devices and methods, and nucleic acid analysis devices.In addition to prosecuting patents, Rory also has experience analyzing international patent portfolios, negotiating and drafting licenses, advising clients with respect to trademark portfolios, and protecting clients’ trademark rights. Prior to joining the firm, Rory worked for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a trademark, copyright, and licensing attorney in MIT's Technology Licensing Office. During his time at MIT, Rory was responsible for handling every aspect of prosecuting, enforcing, and licensing a trademark portfolio of over forty marks and also gained extensive experience licensing software, acquiring a particular niche for Open Source software licensing.Rory is an active member of the Boston Bar Association, Boston Patent Law Association, the American Bar Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, and the Association of University Technology Managers. In 2008, Rory co-authored a published article about the citation of prior art references to the United States Patent and Trademark Office in light of McKesson Information Solutions, Inc. v. Bridge Medical Inc. Rory is also an active participant in the firm’s pro bono program. Recently, Rory litigated to completion a successful outcome for a pro bono client in a landlord-tenant dispute.While at Suffolk, Rory became the first-ever recipient of Suffolk's Sokoloff Intellectual Property Award, recognizing that he was held in the highest regard by his peers and the faculty in addition to achieving high academic success.
