Jason has been practicing criminal law since 2005. Jason graduated from Charlotte Country Day School, and received his undergraduate degree from Duke University. After graduating with a J.D. cum laude from the University of Illinois, Jason began working for the Public Defender's office in Charlotte. During his 17 years there he worked every type of case imaginable, from traffic tickets to drug trafficking, from shootings to sex offenses, and from home break-ins to homicide.. Jason is not afraid to take cases to trial. He has taken over 30 cases to jury trial from misdemeanors to violent felonies and he has tried many more cases before a judge. In March of 2021, Jason secured the first Not Guilty jury verdict in Mecklenburg County in more than a year as court resumed after the pandemic.. While working at the Public Defender, Jason was hired by the Charlotte School of Law in 2009, where he worked as a professor until 2017. Jason taught many courses including Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Counseling and Negotiations, as well as Plea Bargaining.. Jason has taught at numerous training programs at UNC School of Government in Chapel Hill for attorneys of all experience levels, and he has presented at statewide conferences as well as at Duke University. He is the former Chairman of the Mecklenburg County Criminal Justice Section. In Spring of 2023, Jason will be joining the University of Illinois College of Law as an Adjunct Professor, coaching trial teams.. When he isn't working hard on your case, Jason lives in Davidson with his amazing partner Kirstin and her three boys. Together they have as many dogs: Saul, Della, and Wrigley. J. Scott Smith is a native of North Carolina.  Born in Greensboro and raised in Northern Davidson County throughout the school year and Kernersville in the summers, Mr. Smith loves being at home in North Carolina.  After graduating from high school, Mr. Smith attended Davidson County Community College where he earned an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Criminal Justice.  After graduating, he was accepted to the Criminal Justice program at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  After some soul searching, Mr. Smith decided that law enforcement was not what he wanted to do.  He decided instead to chase his dreams of becoming a professional musician.  This did not pan out.  However, Mr. Smith did get to showcase his talent and band for Warner Bros. at a stadium show in Jacksonville, NC in front of ten thousand event goers.  He also showcased for Atlantic Records in New York's famed C.B.G.B.s before it closed.  His group also made number 87 nationally in the "active rock" category.  After coming to the close of his musical quest and graduating from Guilford College in Greensboro with an A.B. in English, Mr. Smith decided to go to law school.  In August 2003, Mr. Smith began law school at Florida Coastal School of Law in Jacksonville, Florida.  He graduated with his Juris Doctor in December 2005.  Mr. Smith moved back to North Carolina shortly after graduation and opened Lawsmith in Kernersville in June 2007.  After over 3 years of practicing law in Kernersville, Mr. Smith decided to move his practice to Winston-Salem, where it is currently located.  In 2013, Mr. Smith opened another office in Greensboro, North Carolina and hired Josh Lopez as an associate attorney.  Mr. Smith is an active D.W.I. practitioner and is a member of the National College of D.U.I. I am from Winston-Salem, NC, where I attended RJ Reynolds High School. I received a Bachelors of Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and upon completion attended Campbell University where I graduated in 1995. While at Campbell I finished first in my class in trial advocacy as well as two other subjects.I knew early on that my passion was trying cases in the courtroom.
