Before law school, Michael attended the University of Georgia. Fortunately, the University of Georgia boasts the top-ranked Risk Management and Insurance Program in the country and is the largest undergraduate program of its kind in the United States. Michael quickly took advantage of the insurance program with the idea that he would learn everything he could in order to use that knowledge against large insurance corporations.. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in business administration with a focus on risk management and insurance, Michael knew the next step was law school. Throughout his three years in law school, Michael served as the associate managing editor of the Charleston Law Review, the president of the Trial Advocacy Board and was champion of the Charleston School of Law’s Mock Trial Competition.. Before opening Cobb, Dill & Hammett, LLC, Michael worked for a small, boutique firm in Moncks Corner where he handled the firm’s entire personal injury caseload, giving him invaluable experience in that area of law practice.. Michael Brooks Derrick
Firm: Derrick Law Office
224 NE Main Street , Simpsonville , South Carolina 29681
Practice Areas: Car Accidents
Hello, I am Brooks Derrick.. I am the owner and lawyer behind the Law Office of M. Brooks Derrick, LLC, and I help folks put their life back together.. When someone has been injured or victimized, the most important thing is their recovery—not only physically, but also emotionally and financially, but that is stifled when insurance companies, municipalities, and large corporations continually tear them apart. In these situations, we provide people with the help they need so that they can quit worrying and get back to what matters most—their recovery.. My Story. I graduated from Mauldin High School in 1993, and my family has deep roots in the Simpsonville area. But after graduation, I chased my dreams of soccer immortality to Gardner-Webb University, which were subsequently extinguished when the now-defunct South Carolina Shamrocks cut me in 1999.. Then, much to everyone’s dismay, I chased a career as a scientist from Clemson University, where I received Masters in Biomedical Engineering, to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. While there, I worked in the Microbiology and Immunology Department under a fantastic husband and wife research team.. As a part of that team, I learned a lot about the role the law played in intellectual property and patent rights, and when a brand new law school opened there in 2004, I (for some odd reason) turned my focus from science to the law and enrolled at the Charleston School of Law.. When I graduated from law school in 2007, I started a promising legal career at Nexsen Pruet, LLC, but I quickly realized that I was not cut out for life in a law firm. As a result, I opened the Law Office of M. Brooks Derrick, LLC in Charleston in 2008.. When the doors opened, we served a wide variety of clients in an even wider array of practice areas, but we gravitated to helping people that were either injured or arrested navigate the legal system. Their encounters with the legal system were always daunting for them, and as the practice blossomed, we helped countless folks recover and put their life back together.. But in May 2015, the most important woman in my life passed away. Virginia Bickley Derrick was the greatest grandmother a person could ever ask for, and her death shook me to the core.. Following her passing, my goals and dreams changed substantially, and I turned my focus to my focus to my family and my hometown. As a result, we packed up the house and the office and moved back home in the fall of 2015.. Since that time, we opened our office at 224 NE Main Street in Simpsonville, SC, and we are serving our community and helping many old friends navigate the legal system. Not to mention, we have a weekly lunch date with my grandfather at the Coach House.. My Family. I am married to a wonderfully, talented lady, Andrea Sansom Derrick. We are expecting our first child in July 2018, and we love pretending to be chefs in the evenings.. When I am not practicing law, I am a serial Do-It-Yourselfer with my most recent accomplishments being the (continued) remodel of our office at 224 NE Main Street in Simpsonville and this website. I am also a closet geek that loves all things Apple and Star Wars related.

Michael Melonakos was born in Monroe, Michigan and graduated from Michigan State University, where he majored in finance and international business and was the president of his fraternity. After graduation, Mike headed down to the University of Georgia for law school, and he’s been in the South ever since. While at UGA Law, Mike served as a notes editor for the Journal of Intellectual Property, was a teacher’s assistant to first-year law students in Contracts, and co-founded the Business Law Society.. As a young lawyer, Michael spent several years working for two of Atlanta’s premier insurance defense firms. He represented locally and nationally-known trucking companies, automobile insurers, and premises liability insurers in defense of lawsuits filed by accident victims. When Mike made a career move to the plaintiff’s side, his tenure in the large law firm environment and representation of prominent insurance companies provided Mike the experience necessary to obtain hundreds of favorable settlements and verdicts for his personal injury clients.. After a decade of practicing law in Atlanta, Michael and his wife Bren decided it was time to move back to Bren’s hometown of Greenville, SC so they could help accident victims in the Upstate area and be a part of a beautiful, growing city.. Michael’s experience in Atlanta’s fast-paced environment gives him a big advantage, as he has seen every type of injury and fact pattern and knows how to maximize the value of every case.. When not working for his personal injury clients, Michael volunteers for the Greenville Bar Association. He regularly volunteers at his children’s schools and attends St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral. He enjoys spending time with his family, playing guitar, and playing golf.
