MA Jackson practiced in her home state of Florida for the first 20 years of her practice, and is now the sole shareholder in the firm of Mary Alice Jackson, P.C. in Austin, Texas. Her practice focuses on elder law and special needs planning, including estate planning for individuals with disabilities and their families. She has an AV+ pre-eminent rating from Martindale Hubbell.. Mary Alice's husband, Bob, is the State Director for AARP Texas. She is board certified in Elder Law by the Florida Bar and is a past President of the Florida Bar Elder Law Section and the Sarasota County Bar Association.. Ms. Jackson is a Fellow of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and a recipient of the NAELA Powley Award for Public Service. Ms. Jackson also serves on the NAELA public policy steering committee which identifies public policy priorities for advocacy on the federal level. She is a member of the Special Needs Alliance, a national association of special needs planning attorneys, and serves on its Board of Directors, its public policy and long range planning committees.. Ms. Jackson has been an adjunct professor at her alma mater, Stetson University College of Law in St. Petersburg, Florida, since 1994. Stetson was also her father’s alma mater. She currently teaches Long Term Care Planning in the Elder Law L.LM program. She is also a member of the Advisory Board the Center for Excellence in Elder Law at Stetson.. Public speaking has always been one of Ms. Jackson’s interest, and she has made presentations on elder law and special needs related topics since the beginning of her practice in 1992. She has been a speaker at the National Conference on Special Needs Trusts, sponsored by Stetson University, since its inception in 1998. Her topics have varied from the Fundamentals of Special Needs Planning, Fee Agreements, Drafting for Trustees, and the Future of SNTs. In addition, she has spoken at the annual Special Needs Conference sponsored by the University of Texas for the past several years, where her topics have included Fund Raising and Public Benefits Recipients, the Affordable Care Act and annual SNT case law updates.. Elder law is a complex field, especially in today's world - families are no longer "traditional" and long term health care costs are skyrocketing with little assistance from any source. Clients fear financial impoverishment in addition to personal indignities and stress. Our staff is tremendous and works hard to get the job done professionally and with compassion. Nothing is easy, and certainly there is expense involved, but we provide a holistic look at clients, their families and their legal issues, and offer the counsel we believe best serves their objectives. Ultimately, clients and their designated decision makers have to make the choices which are right for them.

I did not start out as an estate planning attorney. Around 30 years ago, when I was practicing in the corporate section of Butler & Binion, a once major law firm in downtown Houston, I was recruited to join the firm's trust and estate section to assist business owners with their succession plans. The experience totally changed my understanding of the practice of law. I soon found that, as an estate planning attorney, I had a direct impact on how family members would relate to each other after a loved one becomes disabled or passes away. I loved the idea of being a family counselor, as well as an architect of an estate plan designed to protect assets and save money.. I left Butler & Binion in 1994 and joined with Tammy Manning in 1997 to form the law firm, Galligan & Manning. During the early years of Galligan & Manning, in addition to advising clients on estate planning matters, I worked with Tammy to help the firm's probate litigation clients find resolutions to the conflicts that often plague families after the death of a loved one.. One of the phrases I hear the most during an estate planning consultation is, "I just want everyone to get along after I'm gone." I have seen the triggers that can ignite a family conflict and result in heart wrenching and expensive litigation. This has helped me in my estate planning practice to show clients ways that conflict can be avoided or minimized after a loved one dies.. Whether it is working with a blended family, or with parents who want to protect their children from creditors or from losing their inheritance in a failed marriage, my greatest satisfaction comes when I hear a client say "I didn't know that was possible" or "I feel so empowered knowing that I can take steps now to keep peace in the future.". Many people think of estate planning as just focusing on an efficient transfer of assets from one generation to another, but to what end? I believe that my clients have as their purpose, not just the transfer of assets, but the desire to leave a legacy of love and family harmony.

My practice is solely dedicated to family law clients, and for over 10 years I have exclusively practiced family law. That focus has allowed me to develop practical courtroom skills, and familiarity with the judges around Texas. I handle cases in and around the central Texas area, including the counties of Travis, Williamson, Hays, Bell, New Braunfels, Comal, and Bexar, but I have been known to travel to Houston or Dallas as needed. I am comfortable in the courtroom and with all aspects of trial including jury trials, mediation, and emergency hearings. I am client-focused and oriented. My goal is to find a solution to my client's problems whether in or out of the courtroom.
