Rick was born and raised in Orem, Utah, among the orchards and close to Provo Canyon and the proverbial great outdoors—no doubt where he fine tuned his love of archery, becoming a national archery champion when he was 15 and setting a world record in the animal targeting.. Rick received his BA in political science with an emphasis in Russian language from the University of Utah. After a long and fruitful career in construction, Rick returned, in 1996, to pursue his law degree from the University of Utah College of Law, (now known as SJ Quinney College of Law) — where he served as an award-winning editor-in-chief of the Journal of Contemporary Law.
