Mark Alexander
Firm: Seattle Divorce Services
2317 NW Market St , Seattle , Washington
Practice Areas: Divorce & Separation
One of the states in which I am admitted licenses me not only as an attorney but also a “Counsellor at Law”. I best counsel my clients as a supportive but calm buffer during their time of stress and emotion. With over 40 years in practice, I can clarify what seem to be incomprehensible procedures and legal gibberish to my clients, and explain how their facts fit into the legal factors the court weighs in deciding the issues.. If safety is not an overriding concern, I believe my client’s best interests (both emotional and financial) are served by negotiating agreed orders when possible, minimizing the mudslinging common in contested hearings. When hearings are necessary, my background as an accomplished debater, and writing skills derived as a legal writing instructor and Harvard English major, both help persuade the court.. In addition to full representation, I also offer hourly advice / drafting ("unbundled") legal services to individuals representing themselves. When the parties have their own attorneys but are unable to reach agreement, I have also served as mediator in settlement conferences since 1997.. Life is not all work, though. In my free time, I like digital photography, paddling a kayak, hiking, squash, tennis, cross-country skiing --- and playing Wii tennis, baseball, and bowling. Finally, I love tasty food and drink enjoyed with my wife and other good friends.. Favorite quote (from the late Judge McCutcheon, during a trial several years ago): “There’s still room in the law for common sense.”
Margaret Fairfield
Firm: Wechsler Becker
701 5th Ave Ste 4550 , Seattle , Washington 98104
Practice Areas: Divorce & Separation
Margaret strongly believes in empowering her clients by keeping them fully engaged in their cases, whether they are taking the first steps to educate themselves about their options, or involved in heated litigation. Margaret believes that negotiating a settlement in her client’s best interest is often the best way to give her client control over the outcome of their case and their future. However, when settlement is not possible, Margaret is a strong advocate for her clients in the courtroom.. Margaret has practiced family law for more than ten years. Before joining Wechsler Becker, Margaret worked for seven years with leading family law attorney Janet A. George, with a practice specializing in high-asset and high-profile cases. She has extensive experience helping clients navigate complex cases, including closely-held businesses, layered business structures, and tax issues. Margaret is also experienced in protecting her client’s privacy and in appropriate cases will discuss diverting cases to private arbitration for an additional layer of privacy.. Margaret’s clients span all incomes and circumstances, and she enjoys the challenge of problem-solving with them and planning for families that do not fit a traditional mold. She understands what is important to her clients and has handled cases involving difficult parenting issues such as addiction and mental health concerns. Every case is unique, but her clients’ safety is always a primary concern for Margaret; she is always cognizant of how legal decisions affect the everyday lives of her clients and their future.. Margaret is active in the King County legal community and previously served as the Chair of the King County Bar Association Family Law Section and has served as an Editor for the Washington Family Law Deskbook. She is also trained as a Guardian ad Litem for cases involving children. Prior to practicing family law, Margaret interned for the Honorable Timothy M. Burgess of the U.S. District Court for the District of Alaska, as well as for the Northwest Federation of Community Organizations (now Alliance for a Just Society), the Northwest Women’s Law Center (now Legal Voice), and the Center for Reproductive Rights. While attending Northeastern University School of Law on a Dean’s Scholarship, she also served as a domestic violence advocate in Dorchester District Court in Boston.

I have been practicing family law in Washington State for more than twenty-five years. Within the last few years, I have turned my attention to working primarily with the Jefferson County, Clallam County, and Kitsap County communities. Our goal at Kurlin & Rimson is to provide legal services that are tailor-made to fit the unique needs of each client and his/her family. We believe that resolution without litigation is always the best option. However, when litigation is required, we are ready and able to deliver effective, high quality legal services. We also have broadened our services to meet the needs of our community. We have many clients who simply want to have an attorney they can call when any need arises. We're happy to fill that role. We also are diligent about referring our clients to other attorneys if matters arise in areas we do not practice.

There are no boilerplate results in family law. I approach family law cases with an open mind and learn as much about the client as possible. By allowing the client to tell his or her story, we can identify the issues unique to the case and determine the best course of action to get the client the results needed.

I am a compassionate, tiresome advocate for my clients. I enjoy working with them to devise creative and realistic solutions to better serve their needs. One of my greatest strengths is being available for my clients to discuss not only the law and legal procedure, but candid, evolving assessments of the strengths and weaknesses of their cases. For me, family is incredibly important. My parents both come from families with 11 children (I currently have 34 aunts and uncles and over 100 cousins!) and I have always loved coming from a big family. Because of this, I have chosen to focus my law practice on two areas that deeply affect families.. The first area I practice in, is family law. I work with clients who need help with divorce, spousal maintenance (alimony), child custody, child support, or adoption. When parents divorce it is a pivotal time for all members of the family and having the right attorney can make all the diffrence. I have worked with clients to quickly and efficiently dissolve their marriage and resolve child custody and support issues amicably, but I have also had to fight tooth and nail for my clients to protect them from a spouse that is over-reaching and trying to take more than their fair share. Regardless of the issues involved, I can help.. I also work with clients to protect and preserve the wealth they have have accumulated so they can pass it on to their children and grand children or pass it on to other charitable causes that are near and dear to their heart. While many people believe estate planning is only for the rich and famous, everyone can benefit from having a plan in place to protect their wealth, provide for custody of their children, and prepare for the only two certainties in life, death and taxes.
