I was born in Seoul, South Korea, and immigrated to Canada when I was 7 years old. For the most part, I grew up in beautiful Vancouver, B.C., where I attended elementary school, high school, and university at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver campus. I then obtained my Juris Doctor degree from the University of Calgary, just an hour east from Banff, Alberta, and proceeded to complete my articles (a mandatory one-year training program in Canada post law school before an attorney can become licensed) in Ontario.. In 2019, I moved to Seattle, at which time I pursued a Master of Laws at the University of Washington. Upon graduating in 2020, I have been practicing primarily, if not exclusively, in the area of family law.. As a first-generation immigrant and first attorney in my family, I prioritize volunteering and giving back to my community alongside dedicating my time to my clients and my practice. I have recently served as co-president of the Korean American Bar Association, I am the minority bar association representative for the Washington State Bar Licensure Task Force, and I am a volunteer attorney at Eastside Legal Assistance Program.. Out of the office, you can find me exploring new restaurants in the city, traveling to new places, and spending time with my family, including my two samoyeds, Tofu and Boki.

As a woman and as a member of the LGBT community, I believe all people should be treated fairly and equally regardless of minority status, and understand the unique issues facing members of the LGBT community. I have a passion for Juvenile Law and over five years experience in both delinquency and dependency proceedings.. In 2012 I worked for the Washington United for Marriage campaign, successfully defending Washington State’s Marriage Equality law at the ballot box. While I am excited about winning this crucial civil right, I recognize we still have work to do to achieve equality.. I presented at the Oregon Criminal Defense Lawyers Association’s annual Juvenile Law seminar in 2009 and 2011 and my run for the Oregon State Senate was fueled by my dissatisfaction with the juvenile and criminal justice systems.. As your lawyer I will work hard to find the strategy or legal issue that has the potential to help you with your case. I pride myself on persuasive and creative arguments even in cases where the law doesn’t seem to support my client’s position.. I look forward to working with you to resolve your legal case.

The only thing that really matters is who you love. After thirty years as an estate planning and probate attorney, that’s one thing that I know for sure! Yes, we’ll ask you about the money, the tax planning, the way your retirement and life insurance are designated, who gets your jewelry and shop equipment. But we always circle back to the issue of why those things are important. Who do you love, and how should they be cared for if when you are gone? What is the best tax advantaged way to care for those people?. Everybody has a Will. The state legislature wrote one for you. It’s called the Intestacy Statute. The state’s Will everywhere in the US gives money to youngsters when they turn 18. The State’s Will won’t give money to charities. It might provide for your parents, but maybe not. The State has to presume that you didn’t trust anyone to handle your affairs without being supervised, because if you had trusted someone, you would have told us. The result is that if you don’t have a Will, the Courts will supervise every move that your Executor makes. The Executor can’t sell the house without the Court reviewing all the offers. She can’t clean out your home or have a garage sale without an order from the Court.. Our goal is to help you identify your wishes, and then draft documents that capture your heart, planning in a way that gives you the best estate tax planning, maximizing your gifts.. We are located in the heart of Bellevue, WA and our office is easily accessible to King County areas of Seattle, Kirkland, Mercer Island, Renton, Issaquah, Bothell, Mill Creek and Redmond.. Madeline Gauthier is a graduate of Gonzaga University Law School and the University of Florida's Graduate Tax Program. She is formerly an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Washington. Her private practice opened in Bellevue, WA in 1992, where she has specialized in estate planning, probate and the tax complications of both of those areas.. Memberships include the East King County Estate Planning Council (formerly a board member), the East King County Bar Association (previously a board member), the King County Bar Association, and the East King County Bar Probate, and Estate Section (currently chair).
