I handle all types of criminal defense.  I have spent many years understanding and defending the most difficult of cases - alleged child abuse.  These cases are very difficult to defend because it requires an understanding of the medical aspects of the case.  I bring this experience and knowledge to your case, along with a great number of physicians who assist me.  If you have been falsely accused of abusing your child, please feel free to give me a call to discuss the facts of your case.. In addition, I handle a significant number of sexual assault allegation cases. I have a significant number of sexual assault trial wins. Recently. the Wisconsin Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (WACDL) named an award after me. That award is given to attorneys who get a not guilty verdict at trial on a felony sexual assault. As a firm, we are highly skilled in defending allegations of sexual assault.. We are also a very experienced federal defense firm.  Whether you or a loved one have been charged with a drug conspiracy, human trafficking or any other federal charge, call me or my partner Anthony Cotton.. I have been a lawyer since 1995.  I went back to school after my children entered grade school.  I am proud to practice with my son and partner, Anthony Cotton.  We are a family orientated firm and we strive to give close and personal attention to all our clients.  We know that a criminal allegation affects not only the accused, but his or her entire family.  We will be honored and happy to help you.

I was born and raised in La Crosse, Wisconsin. I received my B.A. from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1990. While at St. Thomas, I was a four-year letterwinner in men's basketball, serving as captain during the 1988-89 and 1989-90 basketball campaigns. After graduating from St. Thomas, I coached college basketball at St. Mary's University in Winona, Minnesota from 1990 to 1994. During my tenure at St. Mary's, I also worked in the admissions office and served as director of alumni relations, actively involved in St. Mary's recruiting and fundraising efforts. In 1995, I left St. Mary's to attend law school at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I graduated from Marquette Law School in 1998.. Since graduating from law school, I have practiced exclusively in the area of personal injury litigation with a statewide practice. I have handled cases throughout the state, trying numerous cases to verdict in Milwaukee, Waukesha and surrounding counties; as well as Dunn, Wood and Brown Counties. I am an active member of the Wisconsin Association for Justice, currently serving as a member of WAJ's Board of Directors.  I have also served as Chair of WAJ's Program Committee and currently serve as a member of the Editorial Board of "The Verdict", WAJ's seasonal publication where I review a book for the organization in each issue. I have served as the chair of WAJ New Lawyers Division and served on the Wisconsin Civil Justice Education Foundation Board of Directors. I have spoken to various groups throughout the state, including students, paralegals and attorneys, about personal injury matters and the civil justice system. In 2006, 2007, and 2008, I was selected as a "Rising Star" by Wisconsin Super Lawyers & Rising Stars; a magazine published by and for Attorneys. From 2009 through 2020, I was elected a Super Lawyer by my peers. The selection process for such an "award" identifies qualified candidates by using a multi-step evaluation process that incorporates peer recognition and professional achievement.. I am board-certified in Civil Trial Law by the National Board of Trial Advocacy (NBTA).  A National Board of Trial Advocacy Certified Attorney has demonstrated skill and expertise in a particular field and has proven it through trial experience, rigorous examination and testing by the NBTA. This designation is held by a small percentage of attorneys in Wisconsin.. I am AV "Preeminent" Rated by Martindale Hubbell Peer Review Ratings, advertised as "the gold standard in attorney ratings" that recognizes lawyers for their strong legal ability and high ethical standards.. I am a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Association for Justice, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, the United States District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin, and the American Association for Justice.. I am a self proclaimed "wine snob," a music aficionado (enjoying the spectrum of music from Classical to Sinatra to Foo Fighters; and everything in between) and chef extraordinaire who enjoys traveling; especially to the ski slopes in the winter.

My first trial after graduating law school was a homicide case and we achieved a not guilty verdict. Since then, our firm has achieved innumerable dismissials and acquittals. We have won cases that seem unwinable. We have won cases when clients have confessed to crimes. In one very remarkable case, one of our clients confessed to a crime and pleaded guilty with another lawyer. After coming to us for a second opinion we were able to withdraw his guilty plea, go to trial, and convince a jury of his innocence despite the fact that he confessed his guilt to the police.. We have won every type of case you could imagine. Many of our wins occur even before charges are issued - countless times we are hired immediately after a client is arrested and we are often able to convince prosecutors to drop or reduce the case before charges are ever issued. When we can't beat the case, we are usually able to negotiate a favorable settlement. Myself, and my team, work tirelessly to protect your rights. We take what we do seriously, because lives and freedom are at stake. When you read our reviews you are reading real life stories of people who have had their lives changed for the better, because of their contact with our firm.. I have spent my life working for the underdog and the less fortunate. I come from humble blue-collar roots. I spent ten years driving garbage truck, putting myself through college and law school. During law school, I moved to East Africa and spent a summer representing war crime victims in Eritrea. After law school I have spent every minute of my professional career representing my clients with dilgence and care. If you choose to hire me as your lawyer, you will receive my unwavering committment to handle your case with extraordinary effort.
