Kurtis Urien is an associate for the firm's transactional department. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Urien worked as a solo practitioner practicing business law and litigation. Prior to owning his own practice, Mr. Urien worked as an associate attorney where he started practicing business law and litigation.. Mr. Urien has experience in advising entrepreneurs in entity selection, formation, capital structure, corporate governance, employment matters, and effective business tax planning. He has experience forming both LLC’s and corporations. Mr. Urien has also negotiated, drafted, and implemented many different types of contracts including buy/sell agreements, employment and independent contractor agreements, agreements affecting intellectual property rights, and finance documents. Mr. Urien also has experience in all phases of business and employment litigation and knows the importance of solving potential problems ex ante by properly drafting agreements and transactions.. Mr. Urien attended Fresno State and earned a B.A. in Political Science. Mr. Urien then attended Western State University College of Law where he earned his J.D. and graduated magna cum laude. While at Western, he earned the Distinguished Business Law Scholar award for excellence in business law academics, scholarship, and practical training. Mr. Urien was also awarded Witkin awards for his scholarship in Corporate Finance and Accounting as well as Federal Income Taxation. He was also a member of Western’s law review as a student writer, editor, and symposium board member. He also served as a Dean’s Fellow where he mentored fellow students.. Mr. Urien has been fortunate to research and contribute to many law review articles. Mr. Urien work focuses on Social Entrepreneurship and how businesses can be beneficial to both equity holders and stakeholders. Mr. Urien has been fortunate to have his article on equity crowdfunding, social entrepreneurship, and the JOBS Act published in Texas A&M’s first volume of its flagship law journal. He was also privileged to co-author a second article published in The Ohio State’s Business Law Journal on the same subjects.. Mr. Urien is a member of the Real Estate section and Young Lawyers’ division of the Orange County Bar Association, and the California State Bar.
