Paul received his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University's James Madison College in 1987, and has also studied at Cambridge University in England. He earned his law degree from DePaul University Law School in 1990 and in the same year was admitted to the Illinois Bar and the Federal Bar-Northern District of Illinois. He spent his first three years in practice working for an insurance defense firm where he learned many of the legal strategies insurance companies and their lawyers use every day to escape paying out claims..
