Kent is a native of Roseau, Minnesota, and graduated from Fergus Falls High School before receiving his Bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota-Duluth, with honors. He received his law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1993 with honors. Kent is admitted to practice law in all Minnesota state and the federal courts and the Eight Circuit Court..
