While working at the clinic, she developed an expertise in the legal issues surrounding forensic DNA testing and the causes of wrongful conviction. In 2007, she left the university to practice criminal defense at both the state and federal level. She continues to serve as an Adjunct Professor to the Actual Innocence Clinic and a member of the board of directors of the Texas Center for Actual Innocence. She is a frequent lecturer on confrontation law, evidence issues, and defending sexual assault cases.
