Derek Kuhn graduated from Michigan State University, James Madison College, in 2009 with a degree in political theory and constitutional democracy. Mr. Kuhn attended Michigan State University College of Law and graduated cum laude in 2013. During law school Mr. Kuhn was an editor of the Journal of Medicine and Law and was active in the Immigration Law Clinic.. Mr. Kuhn is admitted to practice law in both Michigan and Illinois. Prior to joining Smith & Johnson, Mr. Kuhn gained experience in criminal law working for the Leelanau County Prosecutor’s office as well as the Washtenaw County Public Defender’s office. Additionally, Mr. Kuhn served as a law clerk for the United States Department of Justice where he assisted with complex civil litigation and worked to enforce federal environmental law.. Mr. Kuhn is an executive board member of the Traverse City Track Club where he helps to support local schools, organizations, and individuals related to running.
