James M. Poe is an experienced and effective personal injury plaintiff’s attorney with particular expertise in medical malpractice. In practice since 1974, Jim has held a Martindale-Hubbell rating of AV (its highest rating) for more than 25 years, and has been voted a Georgia Superlawyer in medical malpractice by his peers every year from 2007-2017.. Jim began his law career as an insurance defense litigator with Swift, Currie, McGhee and Hiers, then left in 1983 with seven other partners to form the firm Drew, Eckl, and Farnham, also an insurance defense practice. His years of experience in representing insurance companies in serious cases taught him the issue analysis  and presentation skills that effectively move insurors toward  settlement.. While at Drew, Eckl, Jim handled a number of plaintiff’s matters – an experience he found both challenging and rewarding.  In 2003, he determined to enter a plaintiff’s practice full-time, forming the firm James M. Poe, P.C. He has handled a wide variety of personal injury, medical malpractice, product liability and wrongful death cases with significant positive results, including multiple seven and high-six-figure verdicts and settlements. In addition to negotiating many large settlements, Jim has won a number of sizable victories at trial, and has defended those verdicts as lead counsel in more than 40 appeals before the Georgia Court of Appeals, the Georgia Supreme Court and the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the 5th and 11th Circuits.. Jim offers close personal attention to each client. He believes in being responsive and when he is in the office he answers his own phone so that clients can reach him and get a prompt response. He attacks each case with the belief that the truth is found in the details.  His attention to detail, both in understanding and developing the underlying facts of the case and determining the law which will control the case has been the  key to his success.

I'm a tar heel native, so I'm a huge fan of college basketball. My hobbies include running, pilates and bikrim yoga.

I am a trial lawyer who is experienced in medical malpractice cases, including birth injury cases, and other personal injury cases of all types including motor vehicle wrecks, brain injury, dangerous products, dangerous premises, wrongful death, civil rights violations, etc. Further I have extensive experience in business and college/university litigation. Recently I have concentrated my practice in the area of genital injury litigation.  I have extensive experience in wrongful circumcision and botched circumcision cases.  I have obtained over 16 million dollars in judgments, verdicts, or settlements for victims of such torts.  I have appeared on a temporary (pro hac vice) basis in the courts of some 23 states and federal districts.  I associate regularly with lawyers across the country in genital injury cases.

I am a third generation lawyer from Augusta, Georgia. I graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1989. Upon graduation, I worked for my father, Kenneth R. Chance, who was a sole practitioner in Augusta. I then began pursuit of my M.B.A. and J.D. at Georgia State University in Atlanta. I served as Co-Editor of Legislation for the Georgia State University Law Review. I graduated from Georgia State in 1995 with a M.B.A. and a J.D., magna cum laude. I began working for a medium-sized defense firm as a summer associate in May of 1994 and continued with that firm until July 1999. I concentrated on the defense of doctors and hospitals in professional negligence cases and other health care matters.. In August of 1999, I joined Watkins, Lourie & Roll, LLP, where I handle plaintiff's medical malpractice, nursing home negligence, and motor vehicle accident cases. I am a member of the State Bar of Georgia, the American Association for Justice, and the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association. I am a member of the Board of Governors of the American Association for Justice and a member of the Executive Committee of the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association. I have also served as a member of the Advisory Committee on Legislation of the State Bar of Georgia.. I have personally experienced the loss of a parent and the loss of a child. My law practice has become focused on cases involving the elderly and children - the most vulnerable members of our society.  I an actively involved in philanthropic efforts to cure childhood cancer, and I advocate for the elderly during the Georgia General Assembly.
